I've just watched a video about the phrase 'like a girl'.
It challenges the idea that doing something like a girl is doing something badly. It is very positive about how girls should (and do) carry out certain actions, e.g. throwing, running etc.
BUT it is all sponsored by Always - a company that makes sanitary towels.
It reminds me a bit of the Dove campaign to love the body you have etc.
I don't mind so much that there's a company hoping to create a positive self image and make money on the back of it. There are obviously some questions to ask about what they hope to gain from it, but they are transparent about their sponsorship so that's OK.
I still feel mildly uncomfortable with it, and I'm not quite sure why.
the narrative is quite predictable, but it's aimed at 'tween' girls so that seems understandable.
It just somehow seems to be making things to do with women/young girls to be a 'girl thing' rather than a 'human thing', as if feminism is all about/for women. I believe that all forms of promoting equality are for the benefit of ALL of society as I genuinely believe that a more equal society would be a better one to live in.
