i was just thinking about my stepmother and remembering borrowing her copy of 'the female eunuch' at a young age, and being impressed that she kept her own name on marriage (it was more unusual back then). Now on her shelf is 'the Beauty Myth' by Naomi Wolf which I knd of dipped into.
then it struck me how fake it all has been - she makes such spiteful comments about other women's looks that how can she possibly be a feminist?
for example when Beyonce was on TV she kind of snorted 'legs like treetrunks'.
she has always done this kind of amused smirk at me buying clothes (lifelong size 16)
and her own daughters have both spent time starving themselves down to size 8. One of them now looks like a lollipop (oops I made a comment myself)
surely then she could not describe herself as a 'feminist'?

Don't beat yourself up Hazchem
It was a paralyzing and constant internal monologue for me too. Even now I could tell you the weight age and height relative to me of all my former colleagues. My current team, I'm aware of ages but height/ weight, I'd really have to think about. I think you grow out of it.

I think it's a bad habit that we get into - we comment about what women look like so we think about it more, so we comment about it more.

I think if you can break the cycle by not criticising people out loud, you'll notice you do it less in your head - I consciously decided to not criticise people when I moved to uni (and have been mostly successful, if not all the time) and when I go home now it shocks me how my family talk.

thanks Helpys I am gettign better about how I feel and how I look at others. I just wanted to point out we can be flawed and still feminists.

"healthy competition" was mentioned at my slimming world class. I was not impressed.

I go in and get weighed but have been staying to class less and less because I don't like the undertone of it
