where can I find gender neutral clothes for kids?

Title pretty much says it. DC is now 2.5 and although H&M had some good gender neutral clothes for babies but age 2 and up it's all pink frills or dark grey octopuses wrestling Angry Birds. Any ideas?

Tiny Vikings

Fwiw, I vaguely know the lady who started Mamas and Papas. She hates pink and frilly, but they have a pink frilly dress which has been their best seller for years. It is bought almost exclusively by grandparents.

Boden are great, but pricey. I wouldn't say they are 'gender neutral' but I'm a bit obsessed with this kinda thing too, and I think their clothes are just non tacky and I've never seen 'cheeky monster' or some other shit on their t shirts. Or 'little princess' vomits I love Boden but get the stuff from Ebay where is cheaper.

I find Gap pretty good for basics - vests, t shirts etc.

I like generic bright colours on DC with no 'My little prince' or any of that nonsense.

gamescompendium · 11/06/2014 20:26

I've got 2 DDs and a boy. I dress them all in 'boys' jeans and then hunt out neutral T-shirts and jumpers that they can all share. I think for boys the problem is finding clothes that aren't those smudgy colours, most boys clothes seem to be faded rather than really bright.

Like Others above we've found Boden OK (DS currently wearing a white t-shirt with a duck on it that both DDs have worn) but not as good as it was historically, Polarn o pyret are fab but expensive, their classic stripy range is great and lasts forever, we do find odd bits in Next boys range (up to 5) that are OK (hoodies and t-shirts), I quite like Sainsbury's range but I think it's better for the under 2s.

I think a lot of companies are OK under 2 but then get terrible once they get to the older age range.

Zara mini line does some great neutrals for girls and boys. They sell online and v reasonable prices.

Lovage · 10/07/2014 21:22

Possibly too late to be useful, but I find Tesco stuff alright if you choose carefully. They often do brightly coloured jogging trousers (emerald green, pillar-box red, bright blue) and animal-themed tops and t-shirts (it probably helps that my two boys are animal-mad).

Princesselsaanna · 10/07/2014 21:38

Plain bright coloured boys clothes are everywhere, I find that saying that there aren't any is just a way for people to generally try to prove a point. H&M always has oodles of non gender specific clothes. They have a whole range of £5.99 jeans in red, royal blue, bright green and their core lines are plain £3.99 tshirts which come in half a dozen bright colors along with their packs of striped tshirts, we currently have navy /white as I like navy, grey/black, green/red, yellow/orange. Zara also have core lines in plain colours with plenty of pink, purple and turquoise for boys. DS currently has an orange and a green hoodie and both of those had matching track suit trousers. Personally I not interested if clothes are gender neutral or not I'm just boring and conservative in my taste for boys clothes and detest most logos and buy core bright coloured basics.

Little bird at mothercare has some lovely retro unisex clothing.

beccajoh · 10/07/2014 21:45

Tootsa Mcginty does v gender neutral stuff. I haven't got any clothing myself but met the lady who started the company a few years ago and she did it specifically to address the lack of neutral clothing, so it has stuck in my mind. tootsamacginty.com/

I second (third?) the suggestion of Zara. Their stuff is gorgeous - unusual detailing and fabrics and a lot of muted colours. Bit pricier than Next butI do think it's worth it

strongandlong · 30/09/2014 11:34

I think of diggers and dinosaurs as gender neutral. Perhaps because I've got girls and dd2 is very keen on dinosaurs atm.

I find M&S boys stuff is OK - lots of nice bright colours at the moment and not just sludgy blue/khaki. The occasional thing from Asda/tesco/morrisons.

buttercuplilly · 30/09/2014 23:37

world famous unisex brand: GAP

Also try..

MEXX (love the material!)
NEXT
MOTHERCARE
LEVI'S

Even Carter's they have some cute unisex collections.

Methenyouplus4 · 28/10/2014 16:36

I get a lot of stuff from charity shops / second hand selling sites. I love stripes, dots and stars as patterns, knitted cardigans and dunagrees. Pretty much all they wear is dungarees! My eldest (about to turn 10) lives in joggers or cords and loves bold patterns / graffiti patterns. Brands include: john lewis, boden, next, m&s etc. As I said, mainly cord and denim with a bright top.

vestandknickers · 28/10/2014 16:43

My DS has worn lots of t shirts with dinosaurs on. He's also got some blue tops. He must be a thug then. Who knew?

My DD is currently dressed head to toe in blue. Not sure what that makes her. Although she does have some pink leggings so she's obviously part slut. Confused

And there's me thinking they were just children who have different likes and interests and sometimes those interests are reflected on their clothes.

OP is there any chance you are over thinking this and possibly need to chill out just a tiny tad? Just asking.

Jazzhandsrule · 28/10/2014 16:50

Seriously, where are you looking? There are lots of plain t shirts, jeans, trs and shirts around. What will you do when your child changes shape and has to buy gender specific clothes, or wants T shirts with dinosaurs or diggers on them? Will you encourage him to wear non gender specific clothes or let him dress as he chooses?

ConsumerBehaviour · 02/03/2016 16:07

Hi guys, if you are bothered or not about gender-stereotyped childrenswear, could you fill in my survey for a university project? We're researching gender-less kidswear and your opinions would be really appreciated!

The joules range for boys is fairly gender neutral. John Lewis also sell a fair amount of very plain clothing in their boys section. TBH I don't see why you bother though. Surely you are suppressing gender rather than going gender neutral. Why not buy a wide range of stuff from pink and frilly to gray octopi and everything in between?

Orangebird69 · 29/08/2017 13:50

P O P
Jools Oliver's Little Bird range I'm Mothercare is quite neutral.

Next and boots

Surfandterf · 25/01/2018 10:56

I buy a lot of funky clothes for the kids which are pretty unisex. Maxomorra, Duns of Sweden, Molo and little green radicals mostly.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 05/02/2018 19:13

Tesco has a range of colourful, fun clothes for older babies and toddlers.

This sort of thing. www.tesco.com/direct/ff-sunshine-long-sleeve-t-shirt/258-9766.prd

I like the print on this sweatshirt. It's also on joggers. www.tesco.com/direct/ff-doodle-print-sweatshirt/432-8794.prd

homosapiAn · 14/02/2018 19:07

PragmaticMama · 03/03/2018 18:43

Tootsa MacGinty www.tootsa.com/

Toby Tiger is fun too lots of bright colours - their reversible trousers are great, but it's organic so a bit more pricey www.tobytiger.co.uk/

Indikidual is also really cool, bit retro: indikidual.bigcartel.com/

Derwini123 · 24/08/2018 01:46

Why does it matter if you dress your kid in the clothes meant for its sex?

nellieellie · 03/11/2018 19:02

I’ve always found it pretty easy tbh. Have a DD and a DS. Buy from Boden, Fat Face, John Lewis, Lands End. Often the boys stuff for DD, not always. Just plain, bright coloured tops, jeans. The boys pictured stuff always popular with DD - she has bear tops from Boden, various animal tops from Fat Face.
