Just wondering what your favourite feminist authors or bloggers are?

I love Catharine MacKinnon, Andrea Dworkin and Elizabeth Hungerford. I love them because they all make me think about new ideas, and new ways of seeing things.

Not sure if you 'count' fiction, but I love Ursula le Guin's writing.

I have just read a brilliant collection of short stories by Helen Simpson. Her work really spoke to me.

Feminist Current, by Canadian journalist Meghan Murphy, is the best feminist blog around, I reckon. Murphy is a witty but highly serious writer. And her podcast interviews with feminist authors and activists are the best.

I'll have a think about authors (though I love that I get to be the first to say Cordelia Fine).

But I read loads of feminist blogs. Here:

weekwoman.wordpress.com/ - her last post is harrowing.

elegantgatheringofwhitesnows.com/ - this is plain awesome.

quiteirregular.wordpress.com/ - this is the only male blogger I've read who makes sense on feminism.

sarahditum.com/ - she is a journalist and very well worth reading.

kareningalasmith.com/

herbsandhags.blogspot.co.uk/ - tough subjects but she writes with a lot of wit.

glosswatch.com/

frothydragon.wordpress.com/

murderofgoths.wordpress.com/ - she writes about parenting from a feminist perspective.

www.saltandcaramel.com/ - this isn't all feminism but it's one of the topics she covers.

And if you want things all in one place, this site gathers lots of posts together from different blogs (it might also have things specifically written for it, I'm not sure), so you can search easily. aroomofourown.org/

I'm sure there are more but those are the ones I can think of right now.

Dworkin was that rare combination, a powerful thinker and a brilliant, exciting writer. It might sound pretentious to describe feminist theory as thrilling, but Dworkin at her best fits that description.

As far as blogs go, I'd happily evangelise for: I blame the patriarchy; Gradient lair; Not a zero sum game; Sian and crooked rib; and Days like crazy paving.

LizzieVereker · 11/05/2014 22:50

Great thread :) I'll be having a look at all your suggestions, thank you for sharing them. I keep meaning to return to Dworkin. I was a bit intimidated by it in my younger days.

My suggestions are very dated but I have enjoyed Angela Carter, especially The Bloody Chamber, and because of my job I'm always looking for feminist literary criticism. My old favourites are Marilyn French's "Shakespeare's Division of Experience" - it still sounds so fresh, and Gilbert and Gubars's "Madwoman in the Attic" - the revised 20th (I think) anniversary edition was great, really thought provoking.

I'd add Marge Piercy - woman on the edge of time to the fiction/author strand. Just read it and was brilliant.

Blogs wise all the ones mentioned are great. I'd also include Ending Victimisation & Blame. They don't just blog, they do campaigns, training courses and consultancy. But their submissions area deal with day to day issues of victim blaming in the media and personal accounts too.

Also to add to the list: One Woman's Thoughts - beautiful poet
Rebecca Mott (TW) - Her experiences as an exited woman
Jeanne de Montbaston Wink - Medieval History and Feminism combined
Root Veg - Radical Feminism
Fire Womon - Radical Feminism

Bit rambly for me, and over-keen on penises. But each to their own.

I do properly love One Woman's Thoughts.

scallopsrgreat · 12/05/2014 21:57

Grin I should know better than to catch up with MN at work. Because that made me laugh out loud in an open plan office LRD!

I apologize, and thank you.

I loved femonade when I started reading feminist blogs, but I think she lacks some nuance. A great introduction though to lots of feminist ideas.
