www.standard.co.uk/news/london/end-humiliating-game-of-taking-photos-of-women-eating-on-the-tube-9243220.html

I am not sure it is lawful if it is of one woman where she has a reasonable expectation of privacy.

Yay! Facebook have taken this down -the rather pompous initiator is on Radio 4 now!

wigglybeezer · 11/04/2014 08:32

I have just listened to him justifying it as he is an " artist ".

There are many reasons why this type of thing is wrong, the simplistic argument is that it is just extremely bad manners.

wugiwugi · 11/04/2014 10:37

I just checked and it's still there.

It isn't just men taking photos btw- a lot of uploaders are female.

And there's no reason for it to be taken down, it isn't illegal (come on how much privacy can you "reasonably" really expect on public transport in London or NY?), it isn't violent and there isn't any nudity.

Anyway I can't help but notice a lot of the food being consumed is of the unhealthy sort.

JaneinReading · 11/04/2014 12:16

I would argue you have an expectation of privacy when you eat on the tube and the courts held that was the case in a decision about JK Rowling's child (on a public street in a buggy) (and indeed the Duchess of Cambridge's breasts). Obviously it could be touch and go if that rule would be applied or not but you could well breach the Data Protection Act 1998. It is different from taking a film of football supporters or shoppers shopping at Christmas. Individual photos often do need consent. It is not a straight forward legal issue.

As for why I feel pictures of fat women eating on tubes taken by men on the whole with a page called women eating on tubes is different from the men in red trousers page it's because of the way women are subjected to much more abuse for how they look and are in public spaces than men are. It is not a gender neutral issue. I accept Eric Pickles is often pictured with food etc but there is definitely more comments made by men about women in public all the time, day by day. My sons have never ever had anyone shout anything out about them when they go cycling - I asked the other day. I always get it.

I don't really understand the point in it?!

NurseyWursey · 11/04/2014 12:31

Fat women? Where did you get that from? The women aren't fat Confused

So basically you're saying if this happens to men it's not a bad thing, but for women it is?

wugiwugi · 11/04/2014 13:58

If it's any consolation insults or judgmental comments of any sort on the Facebook group aren't allowed on the photos. And there's a strict rule about no minors being allowed in the photos (even in the background).

The comments generally seem to be about the actual food being consumed rather than the person eating it.

scallopsrgreat · 11/04/2014 13:58

I don't think Jane is saying it isn't a bad thing. Just that the impact on men as a class is not the same as women as a class as there isn't the history of objectification of men as there is of women.

It still comes down to why only women? Why does he think it is OK to photograph women minding their own business?

NiceTabard · 11/04/2014 14:02

The point is that if it were people eating on the tube it would be one thing, as many people find others eating stinky food offensive and there are signs up saying not to do it. Although I can't imagine that anyone gets too het up over someone eating something which is not messy or smelly TBH.

The fact that it is women eating on the tube makes it creepy. You're sitting there minding your own business and you have a malteaser and someone takes a photo because you are a woman eating and puts it up on the net. Not great at all. And especially as girls and women are subjected generally to enough scrutiny and commentary while just going about their daily business in a way that men are not, we don't need even more things added FGS.

wugiwugi · 11/04/2014 14:06

I've only looked at a few pics on there, but there is a pic of one guy eating as well despite the name of the group

winkywinkola · 11/04/2014 14:06

I heard this guy on Radio 4 this am.

His view is that as soon as you step out of your house then you lose your privacy.

He sounds like a creepy, self righteous piece of work.

FB have removed the page now.

NiceTabard · 11/04/2014 14:06

Why is there a "strict rule" about no minors being included in the photographs? I don't understand that. That points to there being a sexual side, surely?

Is it OK to post a picture of a 16 yo girl eating a mars bar but not a 15yo? Why not? Why not a 15 or 16 yo boy?

Whole thing is weird as fuck and girls / women have enough to contend with creeps staring at them / following them / making comments to them / touching them without the added bonus of checking for men photographing them if they have a biscuit on the way to college FFS.

Really annoyed TBH.

wugiwugi · 11/04/2014 14:07

And if anyone wants to take a photo of me eating so some random facebook people can discuss my choice of lunch go ahead I don't really care. Just ask and I'll even pose for you

NiceTabard · 11/04/2014 14:08

"His view is that as soon as you step out of your house then you lose your privacy. "

He means women and girls lose their privacy.

I bet if he had men staring at, leering over and photographing him every day since he was about 14 he might have a slightly different view on the matter.

What an absolute wanker.

wugiwugi · 11/04/2014 14:08

@NiceTabard like I already said, both men and women are equally uploading photos. It isn't just men.

NiceTabard · 11/04/2014 14:09

Anyone know why he as a "no minors" policy out of interest? It makes no sense at all.

NiceTabard · 11/04/2014 14:10

The website is called women eating on the tube.

Are we to pretend that it isn't Confused

wugiwugi · 11/04/2014 14:11

The group is unavailable as of now. But it disappeared before then appeared again.

wugiwugi · 11/04/2014 14:12

"The website is called women eating on the tube."

But both men and women are contributing.

NiceTabard · 11/04/2014 14:20

What difference does it make if men and women are contributing?

Why should a 16 year old girl eating a biscuit on the tube have photos covertly taken of her and posted on the internet?

Why do they have a rule saying that this must not be done if the girl is 15?

How do they even know how old people are?

My mum eats mints sometimes on the tube. How's she going to feel about a stranger photographing her and posting it on the net? Why is it notable if she does it as a woman but not my dad?

It is fucking bizarre. And out of line. Glad it has been taken down Smile

JaneinReading · 11/04/2014 16:28

It is gender neutral under the Data Protection Act 1998 and the same if you're 2 or 95. In most cases public photos are fine so you perform oral sex in public at your peril as one couple did outside a bank CCTV not realising they were caught on camera unless there is an expectation of privacy which I think there may well be for many individual photos and the case law supports me. There has been loads of general debate about this issue. The Police had to reissued their legal guidance on the right of citizens to take photos of police as it was too limiting of the right to photograph in a public place.

However my feminism point, rather than my legal point, was that women are more attacked for their looks than men and more attacked generally in public spaces, more accosted, more shouted out - give us a smile love, cor I'd like a bit of that etc etc. This page by being about women eating seemed part of that process.

^"The website is called women eating on the tube."

Does the fact that some women are colluding in the whole 'point and stare' thing make it okay? We all know twattery isn't a male perovative, don't we? < please no one say I've just proved my own point Grin >

EEasterChick · 11/04/2014 20:06

I heard the bloke on Today this morning and was

NiceTabard · 11/04/2014 20:08

rendered speechless by what a twat he was?

Grin
EEasterChick · 11/04/2014 20:09

Bollocks posting by phone.

And was Shock that he was justifying this as 'art'. Seriously? He said it was like wildlife photography and really doesn't care that women may not want to be exhibits in his project. Came across as a nasty, entitled tosser.
