Put off biking.

Hello all, long time reader first time poster.

I've recently been toying with the idea of fulfilling a lifes ambition of mine and that is to learn to ride a motorcycle. I have looked into all the laws and requirements and have even put a deposit down on a little 125.

While searching for more information on riding I came across a bikers website that was both busy and had loads of information I could use.

Now the problem is I am absolutely appalled by the level of misogyny that appears to run through the biking community. One post really brought that home to me....

(I hope it's ok to link it here).

This quickly led to what can only be described as a vile torrent of abuse aimed at a woman that did nothing more than make a sensible comment. Suffice to say she was driven off the site quite quickly....

I know it sounds weak but I'm now very much put off going to bike meets or runs because of the obvious hatred so many seem to harbour be it overtly or secretly.

OP posts:

Some of us are still here Wink

Wrong about them being wannabe bikers btw, I was trying to explain that many of them are more what I would call pedbois.

I have certainly never said that there is no sexism, mysogyny or even bullying on BCF. There is, lots. It tends to be mostly perpetrated by the younger element and there is no excuse for it. There is however perhaps a need to show the bottom-feeders the error of their ways, and if you sift through the dross there are many good people over there (male and female) who are happy to stand up and do that.

Anyway, I didn't come here for that, I came to assure the OP that she could achieve her "lifetime ambition" if she wants. Smile And I'm just popping in here every now and again cos I'm having a look at what else you lot are gassing about today...... Grin

Well I am pleased you enjoyed my posts Pantah & Buffy Thanks I am only learning how to articulate my feminists principles and mostly get it wrong I think.

I didn't report the penis pic one though, I quite wanted it to stay with my response underneath Grin

Do you think it was his actual cat/penis?

Yambabe · 26/03/2014 16:12

like Wink

Pantah630 · 26/03/2014 16:21

See the homophobia riles me up more than the misogyny. I'm not a violent woman but crikey I'd like to give them a slap upside the head. The dating thread, I had to close in disgust, it was blatantly obvious why he needed to resort to a dating site, no sane woman would touch him.

Bifauxnen · 26/03/2014 16:22

I never saw a penis. There was just a pink oblong shape which I know wasn't a penis cos it had corners.

TheGirlFromIpanema · 26/03/2014 16:25

He removed that on his next post Hmm

Needs to grow a set of balls? Seriously?!

wizzzadora · 26/03/2014 16:31

If you read the dating thread posted you will see that the man who posted those 'insults' shows many many times throughout it that he's a misogynist. Taking that into account his tirade can sadly be taken no other way.

I don't think unlinked cares to be enlightened OP.

I think unlinked is a special kind of snowflake Smile

I haven't read all the posts so apologies if I repeat or talk nonsense but IMO you should go for it....get your license and pay no heed to any nonsense.
I did my DAS last summer (and passed) and have a 500cc Enfield. I don't belong to any forums or go to meet ups but anytime I'm out on my bike all the bikers come up to see it and are so friendly and lovely.
I can't wait for the longer evenings so I can go out and about in daylight and warmth

an attention slut, awaiting a white knight to come in, pat her on the head

Well that's misogynistic, right there. You might say it's "just" an insult, but insults only have power to hurt people (which is their purpose) if they call attention to something that people generally regard as low status, embarrassing, shameful, etc.

Ah, now clock that I said I moderate on an ADULT forum. If the OP identifies an attention slut and that's her kink, I'm more than happy for her to be one which isn't, incidentally, immediately regarded as being insulting.

But put it like this: to what other purpose did the OP hope to achieve by posting? When you post within the public domain, you SEEK attention. Or does everyone post in the hope that nobody will read their threads/posts?

What's wrong with being a 'slut'? Are you saying that women aren't entitled to have a sex life? I used the term "attention slut". And to be frank, there's a fair amount of white-knighting going on in this thread.

DoctorTwo · 26/03/2014 16:42

Well done Wizzzadora, there'll be no stopping you. :o

Perhaps the OP wanted a conversation with like minded individuals about something that she saw and didn't like.

Why are you posting?

TheGirlFromIpanema · 26/03/2014 16:51

^^ to unlinked obv's.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 26/03/2014 16:52

Isn't the term 'white knighting' something MRAs say?

The whole of unlinkeds post sounds like something straight off the mra subreddit. Plus the slippery redefining of words and sly shifting of goalposts is their speciality. Not sure the tactic will work on mumsnet though Grin

TheGirlFromIpanema · 26/03/2014 17:09

Its either funny or scary given that unlinked has a PG Dip. in Womens Studies yeah right

There goes that sly shifting of goalposts bif Wink

vesuvia · 26/03/2014 17:30

unlinkedstudent wrote - "To be blunt, if it's such a "life long ambition", why the hell haven't you done it by now?"

What is your evidence that the OP is much older than the minimum legal age to ride a motorbike? How do you know that she is not 17 years old, trying to fulfil her life long ambition at the earliest opportunity?
