Systems that could only have been designed by a non feminist?

Thinkng about the AIBU thread where the system got confused because the OP was a Mrs but had kept her surname - so it kept asking for her maiden name.

Which systems out there must have been designed by a non feminist? I was going to say male but I think that would have been a bit sexist?

Have you noticed that when you have a drop down menu - it's predominantly Mr that comes first. Then all the female titles?

Little things, I know. I'm sure you can find some bigger things where the system is just not designed to cope with women.

Oh and POCKETS, my baby son's trousers have better pockets than mine, and he couldn't even use them.

SnoopySnooperson · 02/03/2014 13:46

Quangle, that is possibly the most simple yet genius idea to ever be posted. You should patent it or something Smile

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 02/03/2014 16:15

Pockets, absolutely!

MrsGarlic · 04/03/2014 15:52

Agree with quite a few of these! Although our mortgage paperwork does actually always comes addressed to Mrs A and Mr N Garlic (we do share the surname) and so does the life insurance (separate company). I'm guessing it must be because we put my name down first, as usually happens because I'm usually the one to sort out financial things!

The estate agents however routinely used to phone my husband despite my name being put down as lead tenant. We did that because I was a student and therefore usually in the flat and more able to sort things out, so what was the point of continually calling him at work when he would just say "call my wife please" Hmm

Pockets definitely, and also, who designs women's shoes? I find it hard to find inexpensive comfortable shoes which don't let in water but also don't look, well, a bit clumpy. But this just seems to be standard in men's shoes?

UptoapointLordCopper · 04/03/2014 22:13

Shoes! Yes - I was very surprised to discover that! But now I've found my sources of shoes and boots that don't flood at the slightest hint of rain. And it's only taken about 10 years. You'd have thought that with weather like this everything would be waterproof.

Mother's maiden name as a standard bank security question. Assumes our mothers are all married and change their names on marriage.

The seat belts on drivers seats are designed so there is loads of adjustment choices if you are taller i.e. more likely men. If you are shorter, you end up with the seat belt slipping up to your neck.

Moulded coach/train seats designed for average height men. They are uncomfortable if you are not.

GarthsUncle · 04/03/2014 23:33

What is your source of shoes, LordCopper??

Mother's maiden name, never thought of that. May change my security question.

School uniform, stupid tights, stupid shoes, male teachers obsessed with skirt length and trouser tightness Angry

UptoapointLordCopper · 05/03/2014 08:26

Never thought of the maiden name thing either. Shock In fact they generally don't accept it because it's too short ... Confused But will have to rethink it as security question.

GarthsUncle Lovely Merrell boots, HiTec waterproof trainers, and El Naturalista shoes for everyday. Grin Unfashionable but a pleasure to wear. And dry socks.

WorstDateHandsDown · 05/03/2014 08:42

An obvious one, but prostitution Sad

Linguini · 09/03/2014 12:08

Veggysausage- Due dates are a weird one aren't they. They aren't even worked out from your ovulation (ie conception) date- they are worked out from the date of your last period, which sort of isn't really understanding female anatomy much...

Religious systems are shocking in their misogyny though. I would always put that first, (above loo design etc!)

ParsingFancy · 09/03/2014 12:27

Sadly, not joining ancestry.com is no protection. The problems are:

a) some other dolt may have uploaded a family tree that includes you and your mother with her maiden name

b) that dolt got your info from the indexes of birth and marriage registrations which include your mother's maiden name, and which ancestry.com have now put online, searchable, up to about 2005.Shock

Countries like Australia simply don't allow their BMD indexes to be put online past about 1930, precisely to avoid this problem.

Mother's maiden name is completely dead as a secure question. No one should be using it.

GarthsUncle · 09/03/2014 14:37

Not to mention if you are Facebook friends with your maternal uncle and his offspring, or similar...

As a public transport consultant (hence the nickname!) I am interested in this idea of flip seats on buses. My one question is how they could be designed so the bus still had the same number of seats, because it's very important that when prams etc aren't in the seats the bus can still carry plenty of paying passengers
