To counterbalance the 'films which just annoy you', and to give GarlicReverses some good recommendations. Since she asked for action movies and political intrigue here are my starters:

Nothing But the Truth
The Hunger Games
FoxFire
Lore

Love love love Frozen River Selks and 'Trucker' although she is somewhat curtailed by her newly re-appeared son.

QueenoftheVerse I was actually going to say Boys on the Side. Loved that film and the soundtrack was great too.

Also the Color Purple is a fantastic film with a totally amazing soundtrack.

Oh how weird - I was going to post about both of those anyway and I've only just realised Whoopi Goldberg was in both of those. I do rather like her actually.

The movie Shattered Glass is pretty special in that it only features a woman in a secondary role, but as soon as you meet her, you know that she is the smartest person in the film. She is also the most loyal, the most understanding, the most forthright...and when she is proven wrong she is not afraid to admit it and put things right. Chloe Sevigny played her to perfection.

Also I think the mini series Falling For a Dancer is a good one. The lead character is forced to marry a widower due to a pregnancy outside of marriage (this is in Ireland in the early century) and look after his family, yet against all odds stays fiercely independent, works the land, brings up the family beautifully and remains always, her own woman. Love it.

Lastly, I LOVE the Texas Chainsaw Massacre....in a genre notorious for its one dimensional portrayal of women, it shines as a film where the women are the smart, strong ones. Even the remake wasn't too bad.
