Not keen on lad's nights either. I'm in my forties and haven't been a girl for sometime.

Haven't posted in this topic before. What would forward thinking people call this?

Female night out? X chromosome exclusive soirée? Gender specific evening - type F? Eh??

DoItTooJulia · 18/01/2014 17:14

Well, it's better than ladies on tour or some such bullshit Grin I don't get worked up about it, if I'm going out with my girlfriends, it's a girls night out, isn't it?

One could say just night out I suppose, but again, I'm not fussy.

BillyBanter · 18/01/2014 17:16

I don't like girls nights outs generally and what I imagine them to be (even though I know they can take many forms) but I don't object to the phrase.

Marcelinewhyareyousomean · 18/01/2014 17:18

If I'm away/out with my adult friends, I'm not with girls. Tis strange to infantilise a gender name. I just go on night out it for weekends away.

Not the worst thing in the world, it sounds silly to me for adults to describe themselves this way. Have at it if it's your thing.

Friends' night out. I don't see the gender to be important!

BillyBanter · 18/01/2014 17:31

If women had girls nights out and men had men's nights out then I'd might be bothered but they have boys nights out.

NiceTabard · 18/01/2014 17:32

I find it odd the lads night out / girls night out thing.

What is the implication? I have always socialised with just whoever I socialised with, and paid no heed to their sex. Mind you I find it odd at some BBQs and stuff when men and women seem to be expected to segregate according to sex. And eat and drink according to sex too. Odd. I tend to drink lager and eat large burgers and more or less eschew the salad and talk to who I feel like irrespective of their genitalia Grin

I dislike the use of "girls" for adult women deeply unpleasant.

But I can take "girls' night out" as an idiom (unlike, say 'holiday with the girls' which I would take as a trip with DDs, or 'my DH is texting a girl" which I would see as potentially grooming a femal child).

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 18/01/2014 17:47

My thread obviously caused this. I'm sorry that in my desperate loneliness I didn't pause long enough to think about the words I used before I reached out.

Many apologies. I'm sure you OP on the other hand are surrounded by fabulous great female friends at all times as you are obviously a compassionate and caring sort. You know, for your first thought in response or reading my post was to judge me for saying 'girls' Hmm

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 18/01/2014 17:58

But obviously I'm not 'forward thinking' so who cares what I think Angry

freyasnow · 18/01/2014 18:01

What is your thread, Fish?

Unlike others on this thread, I do care about what sex my friends are. Almost all of my friends are women. I do think it completely changes social interaction if a lot of a group are men.

I wouldn't refer to adult women as girls, but I don't have an issue if other women refer to themselves that way.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 18/01/2014 18:03

I started a thread in chat an hour or so before the OP started this saying I was in desperate need of a 'girls night out'.

This has really cemented my shit mood I can tell you AngryAngry

freyasnow · 18/01/2014 18:10

There's nothing wrong with your thread fish. Perhaps it was just coincidence that the OP started this one?

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 18/01/2014 18:38

Yes, I'm sure that's possible..

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 18/01/2014 18:41

How about just 'night out with friends' OP

Fish dont take this to heart. I really dont think it was a dig at you at all. Your thread probably just reminded OP that she doenst like the phrase.

don't let it bother you Fish, some people nitpick at everything.

Get yourself out with your mates and have a great time.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 18/01/2014 18:54

Thank you ladies

Not sure what's allowed Grin

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 18/01/2014 18:59

To be honest it's the 'forward thinking' that has REALLY pissed me right off. Judge much OP? AngryAngryAngryAngry

Marcelinewhyareyousomean · 18/01/2014 20:01

Oh well... shrug . I think it's old fashioned.

Marcelinewhyareyousomean · 18/01/2014 20:06

Fish I have no idea what you are talking about I hadn't seen your thread before starting this one and won't be looking for it now.

My dislike if the term is just that. I'm a woman and don't like being called a girl.

For what it's worth, I hope you get your night out with friends. Wine Thanks

OP posts:
Bonsoir · 18/01/2014 20:08

I dislike girls' nights out intensely. I like a nice ladies' lunch very much.

Rosencrantz · 18/01/2014 20:12

Don't see the issue here.

Men say 'going out with the boys' too.

I understand if you don't want to be called a girl when you are a woman, but men get boy too.
