So she has lost her identity. Surname and first name.

"Using Phillips' married name, a Palace spokesperson said in a statement at the time: "Mr and Mrs Mike Tindall are very pleased to announce that Zara Tindall is expecting a baby in the new year."

Fancy that. A redundant, outdated anachronism, no longer relevant to modern society, using a redundant, outdated anachronism, no longer relevant to modern society.

It's almost as if the royal family need to hold on to outdated principles and customs for some reason or other.

I would imagine in this case it's something to do with Palace protocol as much as anything. If Zara had a title, like Duchess of something, I think the announcement would have been made differently.

It took me a while to find but this is the announcement of the birth of Zara's brother Peter. Princess Anne gets to have her own name (and title) mentioned as well as "Mrs Mark Phillips" - you know, to distinguish her from all the other Princess Annes there are knocking about. Hmm The Queen also got her own name in the birth announcement but most other royal births have been along the lines of 'HRH The Princess of Wales', which is essentially the same as 'Mrs Mike Tindall' only fancier.

I don't disagree, it's disappointing to see Zara Phillips listed as some kind of appendage of Mike Tindall. I'm guessing she knew this was going to happen in advance.

There's a thread in AIBU as well on this.

The Palace always uses this system, I doubt anyone is going to persuade the Queen to change her preferred modes of address.

TheGirlFromIpanema · 17/01/2014 14:09

Hmm, I dunno.

She still uses her own name for competing and perhaps she became Tindall as she was happy to ditch Phillips and the royal connection iyswim?

Don't like the use of only the mans first name tbh, but that could just be the spokesperson rather than the couple themselves I'd have thought.

If we are going to hold the royals up for scrutiny in terms of being relevant in a modern world I don't think this particular couple are the ones we need to examine Smile

It used to amaze me at Wimbledon a few years back when competitors in the Ladies' events were referred to by their husbands' names on the scoreboard.

Evonne Goolagong had married Roger Cawley and was listed as Mrs RV Cawley, even though she was known by both names i.e. Evonne Goolagong Cawley. It seemed like something out of the Dark Ages!

TeiTetua · 26/01/2014 17:16

Oh dear, it's hard to say what's right. "Mrs Zara Phillips Tindall and Mr Mark Tindall are happy to announce that they are expecting a baby in the new year"? (You'll list my name first if you please, because I'll be the one doing the heavy lifting.)

CaptChaos · 26/01/2014 17:39

To be fair, Evonne Goolagong was a winner whatever she was called, she was one of very few Australian Aborigines to actually have a passport to be able to leave the country.

Have they stopped doing that at Wimbledon?

Wimbledon is anachronistic (though I still love Wimbledon!).
For example, it is the only place where male players are simply given a surname when the score is called while female players are always called Miss X or Mrs X.
