5yo DD "mummy, why do the boys not have to wear tops swimming?". (I've not found a decent answer to this one).

5yo DD again "mummy, who was the first woman on the moon?" (me Sad). Then a long chat about how women weren't really allowed to be pilots in those days so they never ended up on the moon. Me and DD have discussed it and she is going to do maths and a science and be the first woman on the moon. She even wrote "I want to be a space woman" in her book at school today.

7yo DS, watching a programme about sharks "mummy, why are they called MANEATERS?!!". We then decided they should be 'people eaters' (even though sharks aren't as nasty as they're made out to be).

Your dd and ds sound wonderful.

Has your dd heard Roxette's first girl on the moon?

Brilliant!
DD1 4.5 has always been very independent of others in what she wears, plays with etc.
she loves blue, even though all of her friends love pink, she is loves with Pirates & Dinosaurs, despite all of her friends playing with dolls. Peter Pan is her hero! She's never really bowed to peer pressure such as " but pink is girls & blue is boys, why don't you like pink" from her best friend!
However now she's in reception she's almost apologetic for this. It makes me a bit sad.
Last week her friend told her she couldn't be a taxi driver or an explorer because it's not for girls. She just gave her a withering look & said " it is if I want to be one!" Grin.

it is if I want to be one!" grin.

^Thats fabulous. She sounds brilliant.

DS is 9 and is starting to challenge things that he sees as sexist. FIL was laughing at him for "screaming like a girl" when he was being tickled DS shot back " Are you talking about the pitch of my voice Grandad or are you being sexist?"

FIL didn't really know what to say other than sorry!

Tell her that the first BRITISH astronaut (of either sex) was a woman, Helen Sharman.

But also tell her that it doesn't matter what sex the person is, but that they tried hard and succeeded.

Meglet · 07/01/2014 09:43

whenthered that's exactly it, a little shine coming off the world.

uri we did some googling and Helen Sharman came up, it made DD happy.

My lovely ds (7) said - I know boys say boys are better than girls and girls say girls are better than boys but that's just what they say - it is silly isn't it mummy because people are the same .
Favourite book for a whole was about sufferagettes

I remember when dd1 (I have 3), came running out of school when she was about 7 and told me that "did I believe that women used to not be allowed to vote?" and that some people actually thought that girls couldn't do the same jobs as boys. She was nosying around the school library & found a book on suffragettes. The look of incredulity on her face!

Starballbunny · 07/01/2014 19:53

DD2 takes a dim view of Christianity, with a male god and all this fuss about his Son and his male disciples.

Joiningthegang · 08/01/2014 06:48

When dd was 10 and there was a tv discussion, with prompting said "instead of telling girls what to wear, shouldn't they be telling boys not to be horrible to girls"

So proud!!

The following week a discussion ended with "but daddy has an important job" implication that mine isn't - ( mine is I think)
