Caroline Criado Perez and #feministtenner

She's had another pasting from idiots after campaigning to put a woman on the back of the £10 note. Why do some men, and it is probably 95% male abuse, feel the need to do this? They end up looking petty minded and a bit silly, and give the rest of us a bad name.

I think that the campaign was thought of as a trivial matter in the 'big scheme' of things - well, at least to some people anyway. There was some pretty horrible imagery being tweeted about what some people would do with tht first tenner before Lynn C Schreiber came up with her tweet that started the ball rolling on

Caroline Criado Perez is regarded as being above her station....because we all know women are supposed to be quiet and unassuming and just accept the status quo Hmm. oh and if you do think starting a campaign is a good idea, make sure it's really, really life changing and monumental and intersectional otherwise you're shit Hmm. She's between a rock and a hard place at times!

Turns out that due to #feministtenner trending and the responses, Refuge saw donations rise four-fold yesterday, which is an excellent outcome when you look at why the #feministtenner HT even had to be made!

DoctorTwoTurtleDoves · 13/12/2013 06:56

I get what you mean about it being thought of as a 'trivial matter', given that HM the Q is on every banknote due to her being titular head of state.

I also understand that this is a small victory in the grand scheme of things but it's still important. The default setting is rich white male, and anything that changes that I will celebrate.

Well played by Lynn Schreiber for starting the ball rolling regarding the donations to Refuge using the #feministtenner. It's heartening to see donations rise at a time when many are struggling to put meals on the table. It would be nice if this ugly government matched all donations raised by this hashtag.

Good to know about the rise in donations because there were also some losers tweeting about how #feministtenner was a waste of time as it didn't come out until 2017. Thought there must have been people who donated 'early'. Seems lots of people want to have a pop for any reason they can find

thisismyYuleTimenickname · 13/12/2013 15:00

Donating a "feminist tenner" to Refuge is a great idea.

Dervel · 13/12/2013 17:09

I don't really get this whole thing. I guess in my male privilege (and given the fact HM The Queen is on 100% of banknotes), I had written off the campaign as something I wouldn't go so far as saying was frivolous, but I didn't particularly care about.

However that said if someone DID care enough about it and if enough someone's cared about it I certainly wasn't against it. Quite frankly who the fuck was I to say how other people should spend their time, and what people should and shouldn't care enough to campaign about?

Frankly I am always impressed when anyone these days manages to get a message out, acted on, and past all the cynical apathy we are affected by in the modern age, so whilst I didn't particularly care about the banknote per se, well bloody done Ms Perez.

What I do care about however, and I care about a great deal is the flak she received for sticking her head above the parapet. Which was quite frankly fucking obscene. If her detractors really did believe what she was doing was frivolous, then opposing her must therefore be equally frivolous, actually scratch that more frivolous.

Yet no I don't think that was the case evidently she was right all along, and I was wrong not to care. To get this much hatred, to get that much vitriol directed at her over changing a sodding picture on some bits of bloody paper is symptomatic of something truly sinister, and Refuge can count on my first Austin tender as well (another good idea too!).

Sorry I get that, what I don't get was why some people matched the ambition to have a woman on the non-queen side of the banknote, with a vehement effort to oppose it.

I am aware we are sluggishly moving towards a more egalitarian society, but I had assumed (in error it would seem). That for the most part we just had entrenched sexism as the biggest problem.

It's the realisation of actual blokes who actively want to maliciously and spitefully oppose the move towards gender parity that truly surprised me. Like I said if as many said it was frivolous then opposing it must be the same.

What I still don't understand is why the hatred in the first place? Perhaps I have just been extremely naive, but I will be mindful of the hatred in future in my opposition to sexism in future.

KaseyM · 15/12/2013 08:32

The article is spot on when it points out that although so many men dismissed it as trivial, it did in fact matter a great deal to them. Like Dervel said- why expend so much energy on something that you consider so unimportant?

The fury unleashed at CCP was awful and just shows the level of hatred towards women that lurks under the surface our so called civilised society.

ParcelFancy · 15/12/2013 08:42

Ooh, isn't Lynn Schreiber a MNer?

If you're who I think you are, well-played ma'am!

ParcelFancy · 15/12/2013 08:43

And if you're not, still well-played ma'am!
