'Rape victims should have moral responsibility'

I have just read this article (it's the Telegraph) and I am sitting here in stunned disbelief. How on earth can these views still be held? By a seemingly intelligent, educated woman as well. So, so sad that this kind of victim blaming is still going on Sad.

Well of course women are responsible for men's behaviour.

Of course they are.

Just like drunk murder victims are responsible for their own murders. And careless pedestrians are responsible for being killed by dangerous drivers. Oh wait...

APartridgeAmongThePigeons · 01/11/2013 12:17

:( precious its not worth the webspace its been published on.

I wonder if the telegraph realise how triggering it will be to 1/5 of population and offensive to everyone else it would be

APartridgeAmongThePigeons · 01/11/2013 12:22

On the plus side she doesn't say anything specifically about women. Just "victims" so I guess, she gives the sane advice to hert husband and xouldn't blame a man who raped him if he was drunk. Or an older celebrity who had sex with her 13 year old son.

BasilBabyEater · 01/11/2013 12:36

Thing is, most rape victims aren't drunk.

But a lot of rapists are. There's actually more of a correlation between drinking and raping, than there is between drinking and being the victim of a rape.

So how does that fit in with her rape apology?

YoniMatopoeia · 01/11/2013 17:44

Oh yes, all those women who's negligence leads to rape. Disgusting, vile comments (BH that is, not you lot, you are lovely)

grimbletart · 01/11/2013 18:14

It's been six months since her last little publicity seeking burst. Next go at self promotion should be around next May…...

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/11/2013 18:22

Since a lot of rapes happen in relationships, marriages and family does that mean that in order for us women to avoid our 'moral responsibility' to not get raped, we need to never have a friendship, relationship or marriage? Because that is more risky than drinking.

I'll lock myself in my box right now.

No she wont Rooty. When i was 16 i got the blame for a 56 yr old man coming on to me because id got in his car. He was a family friend and my DM used to leave me and DB round his when we were kids so his wife could babysit. Otherwise i wouldnt have gotten in the car.

And what my DM said about the survivors of Saviles abuse was that THEY are the ones who should be ashamed.
I hope Hewson doesnt have children.

BasilBabyEater · 01/11/2013 22:00

It may well be that someone like this who has such extremist views on rape, may well have been raped herself or had someone close to her get raped and this victim-blaming may be her mad way of dealing with it.

Some sort of mad denial/ odd coping strategy?

She obviously hates men - to imagine that they need women to be held accountable for their actions, implies that she doesn't believe them to be quite as morally developed as women.

ThePitOfStupid · 01/11/2013 23:57

Yy grimbletart.

ThePitOfStupid · 01/11/2013 23:58

Just think of her as Jeremy Clarkson's soul mate re controversy.

ShirakawaKaede · 02/11/2013 13:12

She writes in The Independent where she peddles more victim-blaming bullshit www.independent.co.uk/biography/barbara-hewson

And she called for the age of consent to be lowered to 13 www.spiked-online.com/newsite/article/13604#.UnT511NEGK4

I despair, I really do.

ItsOkayItsJustMyDeathFucker · 02/11/2013 20:24

FFS I feel physically sick.

fanjofarrow · 02/11/2013 23:58

Maybe I'm a pathetic case, but that article genuinely had me in tears.

ItsOkayItsJustMyDeathFucker · 03/11/2013 01:19

Same here fanjo, as a survivor of rape and assault I can't find the words to describe how disgusting I found that article.

charitymum · 03/11/2013 18:08

Perhaps mass mail to her employers?

www.hardwicke.co.uk/people/hewson-barbara

That anyone argues that rape victims are responsible is sickening. That someone who knows the legal position and had a duty to uphold same argues it makes her professional position untenable.

Unless of course her job is defending men accused if rape and best line of defence is that 'they were asking for it'. In which case she is just a crap and pretty lazy barrister.

AntoinetteCosway · 03/11/2013 18:33

I have just had a serious falling out with a 'friend' over this very article. Turns out that not only does he agree with it, he also thinks militant feminists are spreading lies about the number of rapes that happen, that false allegations are common, that women who don't report must not have really been raped, and a whole load of other vomit-inducing bullshit. It makes me so angry I could cry-the cunt is married to one of my best friends.

MistAllChuckingFrighty · 03/11/2013 19:33

Antoinette, I feel sorry for your female friend Sad

AntoinetteCosway · 03/11/2013 19:45

Me too Sad
