Milkshake for men..

Was selecting a milkshake in Morrisons yesterday. I picked up one I hadn't seen before "Wing-Co" but had to put it back as it instructed "Don't be a girl". Being mid thirties I am not a girl, but of course they may not have had room to write "or a woman". Anyway, DD might have wanted some and she is a girl.

This seems even worse that Yorkie's "not for girls" campaign as it explicitly denigrates the state of being female. Do they forget that women do most grocery shopping. Are we expected to buy this for the manly males in our households

Also it says it has "added man". Makes me wonder if it has spunk in.

I bought some crisps the other day, got a packet out today and realised it said on the back they were MAN CRISPS. Because they were, like, extra thick and beef flavoured, innit.

I ate 'em anyway, of course, but er... wtf?

gaggiagirl · 08/09/2013 15:01

I wonder what would be in a "girls" milkshake or bag of crisps?

Glitter,ponies and embroidery I presume?

"Shoots hunger down!" FFS!!

KaseyM · 08/09/2013 15:35

From their FB: "Wing-Co. is designed for men who want to quickly ?man up? against hunger but anyone can give it a try! Glad you're a fan of our chocolate fuel!"

So what exactly would it mean to "woman-up" against hunger?

Sounds like a load of wank. Did anyone see Dragons den last night with the de icer for women? Another load of sexist crap. I was disappointed that the two women on the panel didn't point out how sexist it was.

The difference in the way that products are sold to men and women is awful.

Marketing directed at men plays on the idea that men should reject femininity at all costs: man-up, don't be a girl, no wenches on the benches, not for girls, no-nonsense, no-frills, whilst at the same time using those women as sex-objects: Lynx ads, the stupid drink ad where the guys play jokes on strange women to get them to sleep with them, and the Invictus ad more recently. Women are there to be fucked but not listened to or identified with.

Marketing directed towards women plays to their desire to be liked and admired by men and the world at large for their looks but also to the "wind beneath their wings" concept - the supporting wife who does all the work for her less competent husband (Boots, Asda Xmas ads, Oven cleaner). It sounds like a compliment to women (wink, wink, we know you're the brains behind the operation) but it firmly frames them as the ones that do more domestic drudgery.

It all sucks, that's my verdict!!

Spot on, KaseyM.

Is this something that is happening more and more? I know it's nothing new, but it feels like it's becoming more common.

I also think that all the gendered stuff for children (clothes, toys, now even yoghurts...) is along the same lines. Boys: active, heroes, doing stuff, definitely not girls! Girls: pretty, princessy, looking after others/animals/things. Urgh.

Yep, I bought a pork crackling snack the other day and the guff on the back was to 'Dear Sir'. Because obviously women don't like nasty pubby snacks.
