Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Do you think the Diet Coke adverts "objectify" men?

foodworknews · 01/09/2013 21:21

They've been going for years. It used to be a bunch of office women drooling over a window cleaner with his shirt off drinking the beverage.

The latest one a bunch of women in the park drool over a man who gets his shirt wet and removes it before proceeding to have a drink.

Isn't this basically the opposite of what we sometimes complain about?

" But men are much more likely to be victims of violence than women"

Only if you exclude sexual violence.

And why wd you do that?

Yep and the ad dept is prob headed up by a man.

And the majority of board directors of the ad agency will be men.

Rutters

And why do you think men are always shown to be shit at housework/cooking/household budgeting/shopping etc.?

Because it isn't considered their job.

It's reinforcing gender roles and showing that these things are best left to women. It's patronising tripe all round. Yes, offensive to men, but also to women.

And FYI, objectification of men/ offending men is not the goal of feminism an it doesn't cancel out objectification of women/ offending women.

Sorry if I have given the wrong impression. In no way do I blame feminists for the advert or have any angst with feminists.

I'm more offended by the ad (and so many others which make men look stupid) than angry.

I'm offended by the makers of the ads and by the TV channels which show them. And the ASA which allows them.

I have been making this point for years, OP!
Delighted to see your post, as most people think I am unreasonable about it.

Kasey - I am not sure that ODFOD appears in the official acronyms list! Grin

Rutters - ODFOD is an MN special, first coined by someone a long while ago.

Two ads mentioned on this thread: Diet coke - gorgeous young man surrounded by a bevy of office girls drooling over him taking his T-shirt off, having drunk diet coke. Lynx - young (quite ordinary?) mn surrounded by bevy of goddess-like beauties having put some deodorant on.

Interesting thing is that both have the man surrounded by the bevy of adoring women. The women are portrayed as the subservient ones in both ads.

Weird. I was having this conversation this evening re Strictly "it takes two" with DTMF, who likes to challenge my feminist ways to keep me sharp! He was complaining about Zoe who was objectifying the bum of that rugby/sporty bloke.

His argument was that if it had been a male presenter objectifying female in the same way everyone would be moaning about it. Wasn't quite sure what to say, because of course DTMF was right, the lechy objectification was going one way, and yet ...... the women in Strictly spend far more time half naked and in high heels than the men who usually remain nicely suited.

So, while the objectification of men is far more noticeable, the objectification of women is so normalised that it slips under the radar IYSWIM.

I think it does clearly but without the baggage

So what you're saying is that men shouldn't complain about being objectified because there's more of it done to women?

@stickemup
You just come across as an arrogant, dismissive bully. Probably traits you normally apply to men. You should go and find a board that only allows opinions the same as yours, maybe one that only YOU are a member of (just to be on the safe side).

Money talks - If the ads didn't work then they wouldn't be shown. Someone out there likes them.

Nobody has said that rutters. If you want to complain about being objectified and do something about it feel free. I'd just rather use my energies fighting objectification against women as I encounter the hugely damaging effects if that every day.

Stickemup isn't a bully. She just doesn't agree with you or give a shit about what you think. I can see how you would think that was bullying behaviour from a woman rutter. But really it isn't.

Whenever women don't simper and smile and flutter their eyelashes, some men will perceive that as women bullying them.

Stickemup is probably just a little bit tired of the whataboutthemenz posts on here. Like a lot of us.

I like StickemUp's posts...they are no-nonsense and I agree with BBE that some men can't tolerate women who are true to themselves and speak up for what they truly believe...especially if that means standing up for other women!!

As for the ad, I had to laugh at that sillybilly (hahaha) who said it was REVENGE!!! Oh please...it was thought up by idiotic MEN who thought (as so many of them do) they knew how women think and what would appeal to us.

Split - which ad agency made the tv ad? Which production company?

Let's not forget that the marketing/advertising departments of the world think they know exactly what we women want: shoes, handbags, flying pantyliners, sparkles, pink, 5 hour shopping trips, makeup and smaller waists.

They have this idea of us as pretty superficial so it's hardly surprising that they think we'd like to drool over naked strangers.
