Music for feminists

The recent thread on the Wanted made me realise how, these days, masses of current pop music irritates the hell out of me.

So, what do you lot all listen to that doesn't make you feel stabby and/or depressed? Not specifically looking for feminist music, just not anti-feminist.

Can't abide singers who come with strong lyrics but the videos are purely for men's visual pleasure . I find Pinks music and videos are quite often insightful, even the comedic ones. I like Tori Amos and think Cornflake girl was way before its time.

Have you heard of the Lillith Fair festival OP? Worth a wiki if you get a chance. I have not actually been to one but would love to go if they hold it again

I don;t usually care about sexism in lyrics, other than raisin an eyebrow about it, but Dido's No Angel CD really spoke to me when I was in an emotionally abusive marriage.

Prodigy

I love Dar Williams, but if you're not into singer-songwriters-with-a-guitar kind of thing she's maybe not for you (I should say there are lots of other instruments too on her albums) and my favourite album is called End of the Summer. Who can resist a song called 'Teenagers, Kick Our Butts'?

India Arie's first album was fantastic, as was I am Jill Scott by Jill Scott - my era!!!

Kate Bush - gender doesn't even come into it, she's so creative.
PJ Harvey - love, love, love Dry.
Lauryn Hill - so intelligent and soulful
Nina Simone - just a force of nature

And more recently Smile ...
Katy B - she is ace. I love her song Lights On (with Ms Dynamite). She's just dancing, having an ace time, no mention of boys!
Solange - Beyonce's wee sister. Her latest album is amazing. Really creative, and Bad Girls is a very moving song which would have really struck a chord with me when I was younger.
