Lad mag removal.

I assume you've all seem the campaign to remove lad mags from sale, which I do agree with, but I do think that objectification happens the other way too and if we're asking for the removal of FHM, etc then we should be doing the same for our sons too.

Objectification of either sex shouldn't be tolerated, and if we make non-objectification a norm it will benefit al of our children in the long run. I think equality is important in the issue of of objectification and by only demanding the removal of lads mags we risk saying to our sons that it is ok to objectify men, but not women. Surely we should be willing to look at this issue from both angles.

objectification theory is totally flawed, as it assumes what people are thinking, with no regard to individuality. It's just lame attempt to make physical attraction something sinister and bad.
What is so wrong about being attracted/ being turned on by images of the opposite sex (same sex for some people) in a magazine, clothed or unclothed? It's a perfectly natural response and not something that i believe should ever be suppressed.

I've been thinking more about this and agree with you actually. I like to look at pictures of a certain footballer in his pants and in no way does that encourage me to go and beat a man up or be violent.

But then I think it's fair to say that I don't think men look at these images and suddenly sprint off to beat up a woman. If we really are going for equality then we go for equality as the OP states. It's only the radical feminists that seem to think that we should aim to be in a better position than men which from a traditional feminists perspective makes us just as bad as they are.

GoldieMumbles · 10/11/2013 17:04

What does it mean, though? That a person of either sex should only ever be photographed in baggy jeans and a baggy jumper, no make-up and messy hair? Or with a bag over their head? How do you stop someone looking at another person and fancying them for the way that they look?

NigellaLaw5on · 12/11/2013 19:29

Women's magazines do more harm to women than lads mags IMO, all the ever do is slate women for being too thin, too fat, too ugly or too pretty. They create more jealousy among women than any lads mag ever could. Why don't we see the same complaints about objectification of women when some housewife strips off to show off her new "I've lost 3 stone" body?

Anne01TN17 · 04/12/2013 20:27

I don't want my children to think it's normal to see erotic pictures on the front cover of magazines when we go shopping in a supermarket.
I don't want them to think it's acceptable for a man to admire the young pretty girl with no clothes on in the newspaper.
I don't want to turn the tv on and see music videos of barely clothed pop stars writhing around suggestively.
As my children get older and are in a relationship, I don't want them to think they have to do or be like the pornagraphic images they're likely to have come across online, or feel pressured into doing something they don't like.
I don't want my children brought up in a society where youngsters are gang raping other young people, as has recently been reported here in the UK.
All this sexual imagery that we are constantly fed is having a very negative affect on us and our children.
It's time to cover up and show a sense of pride and respect for ourselves.
That means banning Page 3
Toning down the lad mags
I don't expect we can get rid of porn but stop it becoming mainstream
Ban sexually explicit and suggestive advertising.
Give children positive role models

AcademicJDD · 29/12/2013 18:23

Why are decent role models so hard to find? It seems that as one comes along there is then an awful story of them degrading themselves somehow?
Why is it so wonderful to see someone's bits rather than hear their words of wisdom?

Onesleeptillwembley · 29/12/2013 18:26

What nigella said, with the added point that those awful headlines are at child height.
