Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

So according to Citroen, all women need to know about their car...

Is what colours it comes in. While men apparently need to know significantly more than that.... I don't know if this has already been discussed here but since joining MN I've become more more aware of casual sexism in advertising and it annoys the heck out of me. Even so I don't think I am exaggerating:

Aimed at women:

Aimed at men:

Or am I being oversensitive?

According to Asda, if a woman buys steak on the 'wrong' day, it must mean she's planning something, or pregnant.

I'm either going to have to stop reading MN, wear ear defenders or start finding out how to challenge this low grade misogynistic bullshit.

Different cars

DS3 stats are shite. Aimed at a different market, young women who dont give a toot about stats.

.

DS5 is a hybrid, 4x4 with low emisions.

there's a radio advert locally where a man phones his wife and lists a huge amount of benefits to the garage which sold him his van, he then informs her not to worry, they sell cars too and her response is "I can get a red one, right???"

It's hoomour, see? cos women only care about car colour, obvs, bless em hee hee

I get the rage.

Drives me mad too, but the thing is these ad companies know what they're doing. I'm (almost) certain that in the majority (majority being 51%) of cases, that generalisation is true. Really do many of the women you know care much about their car beyond how it looks?

UptoapointLordCopper · 03/06/2013 15:00

The women I know want to know how practical a car is. They consider their everyday use of the car, and the occasional use of the car, and make a decision on which car to get. Maybe at that point they consider the colour. Maybe my women friends are weird. Hmm

I bought mine for fuel efficiency, and for a small practical size for parking. Other positives were a full three-point seatbelt in the back, and 2/3 folding back seats.

The colour was entirely decided by what they had available on the offer at the time. If I had had a choice of colour, I would have been interested in what the available options were, otherwise it is not of any particular concern to me.

I don't think I am particularly unusual as a woman.

sweetkitty · 03/06/2013 15:39

I couldn't care less about the colour of my car, at the time all I wanted to know is it had 6 full size seats and would fit a double buggyGrin
