They did plead guilty (although given they had filmed the attack on the girls on mobile they had little choice).

The youngest is 22. The other 2 mid-30s. No previous convictions I suppose and they will be on the sex offenders register for life, but still :(

She was unconcious (drunk) and didn't know it had happened until a while afterwards when she found the video on her phone

I am just disgusted that 3.5 years is apparantly and appropriate sentence for a violent crime Angry

Because I know one of the people involved (not well) I been following the case a bit and somehow I assumed something like15 years. It seems I am very naive :(

That's horrific, but I am really confused (and I know this is beside the point but..) why did they film it on her phone? It's almost like they didn't see it as rape? Or a sexual attack? If the details are so bad they can't even print them (as stated in the article) how do 3 grown men not actually know they are committing a heinous crime, that (besides ruining a young woman's life) will land them in jail?

How would you word it? Everyone I know who has dealt with sexual abuse has had to deal with it every day and the depression along with and in fact suicidal thoughts. That's not to say you can't have a life outside it but that you can't pretend it isn't also tainted by it in every way too.

It is utterly horrific.
The sentencing isn't really clear tho' from the reporting. As is often the way in reporting in the media, as it can be quiet complex. I am hoping....that the terms given are the minimum to serve and then eventual release is dependent on their conduct and engagement on programmes whilst in custody. IF they are 'fixed term' sentences then an appeal is likely?

HairyHandedTrucker · 21/03/2013 20:46

Maybe, but I was only responding to your Hmm

I'm sorry if I caused offence, I see the point you were making and I was serious when I asked how you would have phrased it. The experiences I have had have had to deal with as a child have ruined my life. My life, jobs, my relationships have all been tainted. And I never had to deal with anything like the ordeal this girl has gone through. I realize that's just me though and others can obviously be stronger.

almondeyes57 · 21/03/2013 21:20

HHT am so sorry about your past experience and the effects on your life. I too am horrified how such a ghastly crime can be so trivialised as to warrent a light sentence . Although I suppose I shouldnt be surprised as this is so indicative of a patriarchal judiciary - women are just objects to these men.

catgirl1976 · 21/03/2013 21:21

I did wonder Pan if they had not been bailed after the attack and that had factored in or something but I don't think that's the case.

They were completely off thier heads on coke and alcohol, but even still, filming it just suggests they were incapable of seeing what they were doing as something that was going to land them in jail. Just vile.

Vile, yes, she was just a form of entertainment no doubt.
No, bail decisions would be irrelevant, apart from the fact that remand people have more 'allowances' than sentenced people (understandably) . It's still counted up in sentencing.

Pan · 21/03/2013 21:29

'life ruined'? Unfortunatley, it feeds into the perspective of abusers. i.e. 'I may have been caught and jailed, but I still ruined your life in the process'. NOT that this was meant here at all.

almondeyes57 · 21/03/2013 21:29

MI I agree you have a point. I have met and worked with many women survivors of abuse who have overcome ( at least outwardly) the experience and go on to work with other women survivors .

The girlfriend of the attacker I know is "standing by him", because he was drunk and is "sorry". Hmm

I've been drunk. Really drunk. Never attacked anyone though.
