I came across this rather comprehensive list of silencing tactics used by anti-feminists to get us to STFU.

I really like it.

We see all of them on here. I see all of them in RL. It is depressing, but I have found being able to understand what is going on when you are trying to get your views understood has been really helpful.

Interesting. Also I think slug has a link on derailing. It is so liberating to have an explanation for why one is upset by certain action, IFKWIM. For eg. I was very pleased to learn a possible reason why I was irritated by people apologising for swearing from one thread some time ago. Not that I got less irritated, but at least I know why. In fact I possibly got more irritate... But I have a reason!

What was the reason?

Apparently it was to reaffirm that the space is a male space. You are tolerated as a woman, but you are reminded that you are a feminine creature, all soft and gentle. We men are graciously allowing you to be here, though sometimes we forget ourselves and use "masculine language" which may offend you. We do apologise, but remember, you are only here on sufferance. You don't belong here in the grown-up rough and tumble world, you lovely creature. And aren't we nice to apologise - it shows that we are not sexist. Something like that.

The page hasn't mentioned (unless I've missed it) "this isn't a feminist issue", one of my favourites.

My colleagues swear but don't apologise. So do I. But I think the thing to do is to ask why they apologise. What answer do you think you'll get?
