A bit shocked at this actually.

I don't think I have ever posted a thread in this section but here goes...

Someone on my FB just shared this.

Between that and the whole ARRSE debacle I think I have started taking this section a bit more seriously.

That's grim, however do be aware that it is relatively easy to troll google with stuff like that. All you need is a very busy website and for all the members of the site to put the same search phrases in over and over again.

Cautionary Whale yr mum is right. It was a bit better in the early 90s. Im 40 this year so i was in my 20s for most of the nineties and is definately got worse.

It does seem that way dark' , from the outside at least

Agree with darkest. I am 43 now, and so was in my 20s in the '90s. I did have a few lightbulb moments then. But I think many things are worse now.

What is the cause of this regression? How do we fix it?

FWIW - I've been a feminist since childhood and expressing feminist views openly since my teens (which means since the 1950s) and I agree that there has been a regression, whether it is the anti-women sentiment, pinkification of girls (my shorthand for stereotyping really) that has really kicked in since the 90s.

My take on it is that in the 60s, when women really started refusing to be put into boxes, through the 70s when legislation started catching up with the apparently strange concept of women as human beings many men treated feminism as a joke i.e. "the girlies are getting a bit uppity aren't they ha ha?".

With the 80s and 90s when real strides were clearly being made on the equality front the types of men who had previously treated feminism as a joke suddenly realised equality was going to be for real and began to hit the panic button as in "let's put the girlies back in their proper place". Thus the MRA types, whose charming examples of manhood we've seen on MN recently.

As to how you change it. It's difficult to polish a turd, so I'm not sure.

It must be something to do with the easier access to/change in the styles of porn & the lad mag thing that kicked in during the early 90s. Not that I'm saying that's what's caused it.

I just don't think it's a coincidence if you see what I mean!

The objectification and pornification that seem to be even more mainstream too may have something to do with it?

I think the porn/lad mag/page 3 sort of culture has normalized the objectification/pornification of women that seems to be so mainstream in the present day.

that's how it seems, though I think it's also a snowballing effect, where one encourages the other, which encourages the other again etc etc until things worsen, like they seem to have done over the last decade or so.

Can't say for sure as I was only a babba in the early 90s! Smile

I suspect it's also because of a backlash against feminism, as instigated by the media.

TheOrchardKeeper · 20/03/2013 13:52

Agree with that too ^

Wow, I didn't realise this was still active.

I do agree that the (far too) easily accessed porn culture probably has had an effect or maybe attitudes never actually changed at all, it's just simply easier for people to voice their views in relative anonymity now, compared to pre-internet.
