(debated putting this in religion and spirituality...)

I'm doing NaNoWriMo and writing a feminist dystopian novel. I need a hymn that has dark misogynistic lyrics, can anyone think of one?

Thanks :)

Old fashioned certainly, but misogynistic?

When a knight won his spurs, in the stories of old,
He was gentle and brave, he was gallant and bold
With a shield on his arm and a lance in his hand,
For God and for valour he rode through the land.

No charger have I, and no sword by my side,
Yet still to adventure and battle I ride,
Though back into storyland giants have fled,
And the knights are no more and the dragons are dead.

Let faith be my shield and let joy be my steed
'Gainst the dragons of anger, the ogres of greed;
And let me set free with the sword of my youth,
From the castle of darkness, the power of the truth.

Again, not misogynistic as such, but very male-dominated.

That old thing! I haven't thought of the knight and his spurs in years.

How about
"The rich man in his castle, the poor man at his gate,
God made them high and lowly, and ordered their estate"
?

Apparently the C of E has tended to drop that verse lately.

Ooh EduCated...that one's not male dominated - I loved that as a
child and always imagined myself riding off to adventure and battle.
I was very sad that the dragons were dead because I wanted to be
the one to vanquish them - and I was a girl - just more of a tree-climbing
dragon-vanquishing sort of girl than a pink and sparkly sort of girl.

TeiTetua · 06/11/2012 13:55

Well, it's not male dominated in the sense of man on top, woman underneath. But it's male in the way that so much of life (even life eternal?) is, all about men and their activities. So a little girl thought of riding off to vanquish dragons? Well, she'll learn.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 06/11/2012 18:49

I'm obviously like acorn, I never read it as male-dominated. If anything, it's the past that is male-dominated and now that is dead.

The whole present/future bit is non-gender-specific.

I also assumed it was about me going off to vanquish futuristic dragons, though, so may be biased. Grin

EduCated · 07/11/2012 07:36

That's really interesting, Acorn and LRD

When we sang it at school I hated it because it was all about men and men going off to fight and men being brave and kind and clever. I wonder if it was the way it was handled/the idea of knights was introduced to us at school that means we have such different understandings of it?

PrideOfChanur · 08/11/2012 00:25

Yes,I was planning on riding through the land for God and valour, vanquishing dragons as well! (That or flying Spitfires...)

It never identifies "I" as male, does it?I assumed in the past knights who just happened to be male did this stuff, but that didn't seem to mean I couldn't do it now.Sad really,I feel a bit "the knights are no more, and the dragons are dead" about life in general at the moment...

wol1968 · 09/11/2012 13:27

What about 'The son of God goes forth to war'?

I don't remember all the verses, but the last one goes:

A noble army, men and boys,
The matron and the maid,
Around the Saviour's throne rejoice
In robes of light arrayed.
They climbed the steep ascent of heaven
Through peril, toil and pain;
O God, to us may grace be given
To follow in their train.

So public boys' school. And it makes me realise why the men were so keen to join up in 1914. Sad

That one's good, thank you :)
