Interesting article based on Julie Gillard's speech. What is the difference?

They are the same. Both are hatred towards women IMO

Sexism: Prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination (typically against women) on the basis of sex.

Misogyny: the hatred of women (by men?)

It's not very complicated.

Trills · 18/10/2012 08:38

You can be prejudiced without hating.

Misogeny is the belief, sexism is the behaviour.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 18/10/2012 09:16

The way I understand it is sexism + power = misogyny. This is why women can be sexist against men but not 'misandrist' - because, when considering women as a group and men as a group, we are not the group with power.

Saying that women can't be misandrist is like saying non-white people can't be racist.

If you are not yourself a feminist you could have a happy marriage to a sexist man, but you could never be happy married to a misogynist.

A sexist man (or woman) can easily learn the error of their ways, but it takes a lot more to cure misogyny.
