And it's the board of governors meeting tomorrow night. (Normal state primary). I can't go but I want to right a stinking letter. Can you help? I'm a work but will check a lunch time.

Can you suggest culottes?

I think a 'Really?... . 'Really? Are you actually serious? approach.

Followed by direct action, if necessary, and enough daughters are willing.

Choufleur · 01/10/2012 20:20

I thought uniforms were not enforceable in state primaries

Why can you not just send your dd in wearing trousers? I would write a note that she can carry and give to whoever addressed, To whom this may concern, dd will be wearing trousers as the skirts are not suitable for her thankyou Mydogsleepsonthebed

I second the stinking letter right away. In about 200 I worked for a West End theatre which had a skirts only policy.

Most of the staff were Spanish, Portuguese and Colombian....from mainly traditional backgrounds where they wouldn't question their boss....and as soon as I heard this "policy" I kicked up a stink and it as immediately dropped.

Coprolite · 01/10/2012 20:28

I suppose if it went all the way usual and I did what I would advocate (and obviously my daughter was willing) they could then exclude them from school.I presume then you would either have a situation with them sending the truancy officer around (or the modern equivalent) and then I would have to say I want her to go to school but they're not allowing her. I expect ultimately it might be an argument that would need to be made in court........IF it ever got that far, which I doubt as it's clearly a very un progressive policy......

I really can't see they would want to pursue this if challenged because I can't see they could possibly argue any reasonable point to a skirts only policy.

But I'm a mardy militant bugger......

BigFatLegsInWoolyTIghts · 01/10/2012 20:29

Nonno Culottes my arse! WHY? Because they "pass" for a skirt? Hmm

NO sense in that. Trousers or skirts for all.

BigFatLegsInWoolyTIghts · 01/10/2012 20:30

Let them know you're a mardy millitant....I am too and I would. That way they'll see you mean business.

Tell them it's not on.

MrsPnut · 01/10/2012 20:30

Gosh, I didn't realise there were any schools still stuck that far behind.

I'd really struggle with dd2 in that situation because she refuses to wear girls clothes. She wears trousers during the winter and shorts in the summer. I did get her some gingham blouses but she wore one once and has refused ever since.
She also wears boys school shoes, goes to beavers, plays rugby and would cry if we suggested she wore a skirt.

That's right about primary uniform not being compulsory though isn't it? If enough parents and DDs ignore it...

LeeCoakley · 01/10/2012 20:36

Dd2's school is like this. I have complained re gender discrimination and price (£25 for a girl's kilt, £5 for a boy's pair of trousers). Apparently 'it's never been a problem' Hmm

AuntLucyInPeru · 01/10/2012 20:38

I have this exact same problem coming up at DD 's future school next year - but it's an independent. Does anyone know if the same guidelines apply? It's a great school educationally (and non-sexist in all things curricular) but verrrrrry traditional in the damn uniform Sad

NonnoMum · 01/10/2012 20:55

Because trousers are tubby 10 year old girls are the most unflattering, ill-fitting item of clothing I've ever seen.

BigFatLegsInWoolyTIghts · 01/10/2012 21:12

Nonno Who gives a shit? The child needn't be "tubby" and even if she were due to a growth spurt, it's her comfort that matters! Not how she looks! A ten year old should be comfy.

Elfontheedge · 01/10/2012 21:16

Just out of interest, does anyone know of any primary schools that don't have a uniform at all? Just curious.

Coprolite · 01/10/2012 21:22

Nonno I think you're missing the point. This is a gender inequality issue not a style and beauty one!

MrsPnut · 01/10/2012 21:23

Yes, William patten in stoke newington doesn't. My dd1 went there for a few years when we lived in the area. It was pretty good actually and we never had problems about what to wear but she was infant school age not 11.

LaundryFairy · 01/10/2012 21:24

There is a primary school in Bristol without uniforms. The governors surveyed parents a few years ago, and the majority didn't want them introduced.
