For me, a beginner, and also for my almost 13 year old DD?

Or some good websites?

Many thanks Grin

Equality Illusion is a good one.

I'd also recommend "Living Dolls", and if you feel comfortable doing so, pass it on to your daughter.

The Beauty Myth was an enjoyable read. But don't let anyone on FWR see me recommend a Wolf book... Grin Oh. Wait...

I cannot believe there are 6 posts and no-one has recommended Cordelia Fine! Grin

You're losing your touch, people.

Her book is Delusions of Gender - it might be a bit beyond her at 13 as it has quite sciency bits, but you will love it and it is written in a really nice, anecdotal style (with notes at the end telling you how the anecdotes are actually supported with real research!), so you could easily chat about it to her.

And I thought you were anti-capitalist!

Greythorne · 23/09/2012 13:07

I also second "The Beauty Myth". Don't hate me. But nothing else by Wolf is worth a look.

I loved 'A Feminist Critique of Language' but it is not about everyday life activism.

Ariel Levy's "Female Chauvinist Pigs" is very, very good on the pornification of modern life and the widespread acceptance of this by women in the West. Extreme epilation as normal. Porn as entertainment. Blowjobs as empowering. Stripping as a way to pay for higher education.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 23/09/2012 13:09

Oh ... and Caitlin Moran's book is excellent in parts and very funny, though bits of it are not funny and you quite probably wouldn't want your DD to read her graphic bits (description of abortion, etc.).

Thank you Grin She's having "difficulties" with her Dad the same ones I had he's a twat and whilst she's doing quite well on her own, I'd like to give her some back up

LRDtheFeministDragon · 23/09/2012 13:31

Good luck to her then! Smile

Mydogsleepsonthebed · 23/09/2012 13:41

She's already doing much better than I ever did Grin she has a very "I take no shit" attitude

LRDtheFeministDragon · 23/09/2012 13:42

Ah, but it's that 'standing on the shoulders of giants' thing - she's doing well because you've already provided her with the headstart of all the stuff you had to figure out slowly.

I like the sound of the 'I take no shit' attitude. Grin

Mydogsleepsonthebed · 23/09/2012 13:44

Yes LRD - and there's better giants that me for her to stand on Grin And it's because I wanted her to be different that I left her dad really - well it was a big big part of it.

Naomi Wolfs 'Vagina' book. I bought it for my Kindle as I felt a bit embarrassed about reading the paperback on the train, but it was an excellent read.
