Fanjo Facts Thread

This is as a result of a discussion on another thread about how little women know about their own vulva. Post facts here you want to share. Or ask any questions - nothing is too basic.

The clitoris is not just the small tip that you can see externally. It extends into a large organ internally. The link below has a diagram of a clitoris.

The hymen isn't a membrane that's stretched across the opening and that 'breaks' when you first have sex. There are all sorts of shapes to that bit of women's bodies. Some of them might rip a little and bleed; others might not. Some people will bleed a little several times when they're first having sex; others won't at all, even their first time.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 15/09/2012 21:54

Oh ... and this isn't exactly fanjo facts, but apparently the pressure a woman can exert with her contractions in labour is equivalent to tube train doors slamming shut (Jennifer Worth says this in Call the Midwife, anyway, and I've no reason to disbelieve her!). So who says women are not as strong as men? Grin

MySpanielHell · 15/09/2012 21:56

EBAL, links just have these [[

and then these ]] at the end.

MySpanielHell · 15/09/2012 21:57

Okay, that didn't work.

You put this sign: [ twice before the link, and then this sign ] twice at the end.

PretzelTime · 15/09/2012 21:59

Yay! You made a thread!
Really interesting to see a picture of the clitoris, had no idea it looked like that.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 15/09/2012 22:01

That's a lovely article too. Good on them.

(Tries not to be bitter about the much earlier, better funded discovery of viagra)

Quodlibet · 15/09/2012 22:07

That clitoris diagram is amazing!!

So does this mean that when you give birth, the baby passes through your clitoris, effectively?

rosabud · 16/09/2012 00:42

Erm......I don't think mine looks like that........I'm not very good at maps.....I don't quite see........so where are all those other bits then??

rosabud · 16/09/2012 00:42

Also, when giving birth........I don't recall thinking about my clitoris much.

sashh · 16/09/2012 06:41

You can have an intact hymen after giving birth.

If you need reconstructive surgery to your lips fanjo skin is the best match.

Adding to the clitoris drawing - it's roughly the shape of a chicken's wish bone.

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 16/09/2012 07:39

rosabud - All those other bits are internal. You cant see them.

PretzelTime · 16/09/2012 21:48

Anyone got a link with real facts about the hymen?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 16/09/2012 22:03

I will look, but not right now as I on DH's work laptop and don't want anything dodgy to get into the history.

Malificence · 17/09/2012 17:27

The programme on the female orgasm the other night , fronted by Maggie Gylenhall , was very interesting, there were MRI scans of the way the brain, vagina and clitoris reacted to stimulation.
Very brave woman who masturbated to orgasm in the confines of a scanner, it took 40-odd minutes, I'm not surprised!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 17/09/2012 18:51

What was it called? I'd like to see. I'm one of the doubters about MRI scans but I'd still like to see what happened.

(wincing at 40-plus minutes, poor lass, ouch!)

I agree. You, I, none of us have any idea about who is reading this, or indeed for that matter, who else is writing on this thread.

SarahStratton · 17/09/2012 19:51

Indeed.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 17/09/2012 20:07

Oh, of course. We never know and we know sick trolls do target this board, sadly. They're usually pretty obvious but of course we don't know if they're lurking. Sad

Mind you, you'd have to be pretty sad to get your jollies off chat about biology textbooks and MRI scans.

Malificence · 17/09/2012 20:08

It was on Discovery , called "why is sex" fun, I think - there was another fascinating bit which showed how semen is directed into the correct fallopian tube by being drawn up by the cervix at orgasm, a woman was injected with oxytocin to cause vaginal/cervical contractions and you could see the path of the (fake) semen.
There were also internal scan images of how the penis simulated the vagina during sex and a possible explanation of why some women can orgasm through PIV and some can't - if your clitoris is further away from the entrance to your vagina than the length of the tip of your thumb to the knuckle, it's unlikely that PIV will make you orgasm, apparently.
T'was very informative, the whole brain seems to light up at the point of orgasm, I think the conclusion was that they are very good for you Grin

MILdesperandum · 17/09/2012 20:27

Malificence - perhaps that explains why after the birth of DD2 I can suddenly achieve orgasm from PIV - I barely ever had before in 11 years! Perhaps my anatomy has changed a bit. Anyway it's one post baby body change I don't mind Grin

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 17/09/2012 20:30

I didnt actually know until mumsnet that vagina was the word for the "front hole" (sorry cant think of a better word!), and vulva was the word for the whole area.
