Mike Tyson the hero

According to Portsmouth Guildhall who say 'Throughout his career, Tyson became well known for his ferocious and intimidating boxing style as well as his controversial behavior both inside and outside the ring'. 'Controversial behaviour' including rape. If you feel strongly that he shouldn't be held up in this way, there's a petition you can sign.

Oh I expect rape isn't "crime crime". Not like you know, real crime

I'd much rather have Snoop skinning up than Tyson parading himself as a bloody hero Angry.

NameGames · 20/07/2012 22:48

Snoop? That's a shame :( Still, doesn't actually mean they won't turn a rapist away. I might write to my MP requesting she ask for assurances that he won't be allowed to enter. Sadly, it could make for a better media angle, especially given this government's vocal stance on border control and "moral character".

UnChartered · 21/07/2012 09:14

letters to MPs are a great idea, will pen mine later

peoplesrepublicofmeow · 21/07/2012 09:48

i linked the link to my FB, getting an interesting reaction
first one was the evedence was bad and many people diddnt think he did it
and another ( from a university lecurer) was 'why would you get wound up about him of all people!'

Many people don't think he did it, because many people never think rapists did it, that's the default position vis a vis rapists.

Time to change the narrative

catgirl1976 · 21/07/2012 15:47

Ha. I have been invited to a lunch with him

Needless to say I have declined that offer.

axure · 24/07/2012 11:40

Why has nobody mentioned that he also bit part of a person's ear off, perhaps because the victim was a male? Is GBH a less violent crime than rape?

Not ridiculous at all, had he only bitten Ivander Holyfield's ear off, and not raped anyone I don't think MM feminists would have such an objection to him being described as a hero - just my opinion, which I'm entitled to. Although I'm sure I'll be told to fuck off .

NameGames · 24/07/2012 13:17

axure I didn't think Tyson received a criminal conviction for that incident. In any case, on the feminist board incidents of violence against women and especially sexual violence are more on point. The Hollyfield incident is not a shining star, but it's not the same as a criminal conviction for rape, especially on a feminist board.

Disgusted by this.
Signed (after I finally found the petition!) :)

axure · 24/07/2012 14:00

Yes I agree he's far from a hero, just wanted to make the point that any violent act is unacceptable, not just rape of women.

No, no we're not SGM.Any discussion women ever have, must always reference men, otherwise we might stupidly start thinking we matter just as much as them and that's wd be absurd.

It could also be worth sending a letter to Theresa May, ccing it to your local MP and ask why a convicted rapist is being allowed entry into the UK and what measures are being put in place to ensure women are to be protected here.
May be worth putting in a couple of examples of potential terrorists who have been denied entry, convicted of zero, not harmed anyone to date yet are denied visas. The response could be interesting.

'1.4
Spent convictions
Under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, a person who has been convicted of any offence or offences is treated as a ?rehabilitated person? after the applicable rehabilitation period, and the conviction is treated as ?spent? or ignored. UK Border Agency guidance describes the 1974 Act, its rehabilitation periods and exceptions, and states that the Act means that spent convictions cannot jeopardise immigration applications:'

This is taken from;

www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=entering%20uk%20with%20a%20criminal%20conviction&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CGQQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.parliament.uk%2Fbriefing-papers%2FSN04971.pdf&ei=JLsPUKfHHcKXhQfCxIAQ&usg=AFQjCNG2VKlCx8OZyz-Pe6pVN-kVvVk2tQ

It's a bit long-winded, but UK law states that once you have served a sentence for a crime, you cannot be denied immigration for that crime. I think you will need to get the law changed, rather than just writing a letter of protest. I could be wrong, but I think this is how UK law stands.

peoplesrepublicofmeow · 25/07/2012 10:35

so why was snoop dog denied access then?

namechangeguy · 25/07/2012 10:53

Cos he shizzled on the 5-O's dizzle at Heathrow. Word.

skrumle · 25/07/2012 13:54

Under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, a person who has been convicted of any offence or offences is treated as a ?rehabilitated person? after the applicable rehabilitation period

from www.justice.gov.uk/downloads/offenders/rehabilitation/rehabilitation-offenders.pdf :
Imprisonment for over 30 months (2 ½ years) means the conviction is never spent

Tyson was sentenced to 6 years for the rape in 1992.

Was watching the Wright Stuff this morning where they mentioned him hitting his wife,

makes me bloody Angry that the uproar is only focused on this one crime when he obviously beat the shit out of his wife for years , as if that's a lesser crime and the fact she probably wasn't a beauty queen Hmm
