Has anyone else seen this? And am I alone in being a little Hmm about the lengths and styles of some of the skirts for girls as young as seven?

This isn't about being-free-to-dress-as-you-please etc, I'm just amazed that this kind of garment is being promoted by a major retailer as an appropriate as part of a 'uniform', or as part of an aspirational image for preteens?

I don't often post on this board, but this has really got my goat...its hard enough trying to find 'young' enough clothes for my junior school aged DD as it is!

Hm. The problem here is that a 7 year old child is a 7 year old child, and a short skirt is therefore not a matter of 'decency', because a 7 year old doesn't have anything to be 'decent' about, surely?

I am slightly puzzled by a skirt that looks like part of a naff Next work suit being marketed as school uniform, mind you.

iswym.. its not so much a decency thing having a DD who happily cartwheels around the school field but that from 7 upwards this is being marketed as part of uniform

Hello timetosmile. It does seem both quite short and form fitting, so would probably restrict the movement and comfort of the child. On that basis alone, I wouldn't think it would be appropriate, particularly for younger girls who should be doing lots of active things in school.

A short but loose, perhaps pleated skirt would seem okay as one, it wouldn't restrict movement (where shorts under so you don't have to worry about showing your knickers!) and wouldn't cling to the body. I agree, this skirt looks very "adult" but still not a style I would have ever considered wearing myself at any age, sorry and is worn by an adult model in the photo. I agree, not just for practical reasons, it doesn't look "right" especially for a girl of 7 or 8 or even older. Heck, I'd go so far as to say it's not suitable attire for a school uniform even on comfort grounds alone.

But then again, I also don't like the concept of school uniforms anyhow.

I can recall reading on Mumsnet about schools where they're recently said no skirts, uniforms shall be trousers for one and all, because skirts are just so fraught with difficulty. If not the design of the skirt itself, then what the kids do with them.

It's a bit fashionable perhaps, but it's no shorter than many. I can't see them selling many to 7y, but Y6 might like them.

Our HT has been on the war path about skirts. I wish she wouldn't bother. The grief the pupils will cause with leggings, jeans, hipsters and heaven knows what else if she bans skirts will be far worse. At least they can be told to pull their skirts down.
They only roll them up, they can't sewSmile
