Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

It started off with me just being lazy but now it's political. Not sure I've got the stomach to keep it up though...

I'm not shaving my armpits! But I'm starting to wibble about it. It just doesn't look attractive to my highly conditioned eyes.

I'm not sure if I can cope with people judging me. Help me stand steadfast!

Thanks. Fortunately dh thinks it is quite sexy defeating the object I know! I just don't want people to think I'm being lazy. It was sparked off by a colleague saying "oh I was lazy today and chose 15mins extra in bed rather than put make up on" & I just thought that not wearing make up shouldn't be seen as laziness, nor should not shaving arm pits.

You could move to Italy - when I au paired there some years ago, all the women on the beach had hairy armpits. Shaved their legs and did something scary-looking to their pubic hair but their armpits were au naturelle.

I only shave mine once a week. Don't care if that's lazy or what - legs only get done every other week (very fair hair on them though).

thechairmanmeow · 27/05/2012 14:29

if anyone is interested i wouldnt attal be put off by hairy armpits and i certianly prefere unshaven pubic area, think it's odd how women are trying to make themselves look like 8 year olds. but seemingly i'm in the minority there.

i'm afraid if i'm honest i have to draw the line at hairy legs, that would feel somehow too masculine

there is no philosophy here, just gut reactions

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 27/05/2012 14:34

If you dyed them pink, nobody could accuse you of laziness. Grin

I sometimes give mine a smart #1 with DP's beard clippers in the summer, but only if I can be bothered.

EggWhiteOmelette · 27/05/2012 14:37

It is the one area where my feminism flops big time. I have managed to last a month with hairy armpits, but caved when the weather got nice (this was last year). I dont go near my ladygarden with a razor, but I do shave my legs religiously.

I applaud those who take the stand, though, and wish I was braver.

BertieBotts · 27/05/2012 14:40

I never shave my legs, although I do have pretty fair hair.

I don't shave my armpits as a rule, but if I'm wearing a short sleeved/no sleeve top and/or I think people will notice or care then I tend to either shave or wear a cardigan etc on top :(

Although currently I am sporting about 1cm of hair there and wearing a strappy top, because the only person I will see today is DP/DS and my friend who I know won't care.

What I do hate though is when the hairs trap the sweaty smell, I tend to shave if that happens.

Thumbwitch · 27/05/2012 14:41

I tried leaving my legs unshaven when they first started growing hairs because they were so fine and pale - until the hairs around my ankles started to go darker and curly just like my brother's. That's when I got rid of them.

Bumperlicious · 27/05/2012 17:26

Well that's a relief chairman, I'm glad don't you have a problem with my hairy arm pits. But can you tell me how hairy legs are masculine? I am a female, I have hair which grows naturally all over my body therefore how is it masculine?

Pink is a great idea, or maybe jubilee colours Grin

sorry bumperlicious, possibly a bad choice of words.
just my reaction to things, no one is supposed to be reileved, like my opinion is so valuble or something, if it came across like that it certainly wasnt meant like that.

what the sexes find attractive in each other, usually are the differences, men dont have breasts, men find breasts attractive, men have bigger muscles than women, usually, some men go and 'work out' to augment this difference.
men, usually, have more body hair than women and women dont have facial hair. so for a woman to remove more hair is to eccentuate that difference.

hairyness and hair removal is about sexuality, not sexism.

but i'm not telling anyone what they ought to do, it's not my business to.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 27/05/2012 18:05

I'd stick with pink, bumper, otherwise people might not realise you're a woman Wink

Xenia · 27/05/2012 18:09

It's not "lazy". In fact in feminist terms it could more be - I spent 20 minutes trading stocks or honing my next client presentation rather than doing [ XYZ piontless beauty routine). It's about advancement of women and achieving fairness between the sexes although I accept many men do shave every morning.

Bumperlicious · 27/05/2012 19:32

Lol pubes!

Margerykemp · 27/05/2012 19:37

do people shave them everyday then? I've never done it more than once a week, often more like once a month in winter and once a fortnight in summer, with a quick dry shave if going on a night out or swimming.

Bumperlicious · 27/05/2012 19:50

I used to work with a woman who would pop home at lunch time (v nearby) to shave them.

OP posts:
Xenia · 27/05/2012 21:24

I suspect the best thing to aim for is to spend no more time nor money than a man on appearance. I have always found that a pretty good benchmark and you can still look okay for work etc like that.

FioFio · 27/05/2012 21:26

do what make you happy
i shave my armpits and lowers legs for ME

everything else I don;t do for me as well

i am a woman

EightiesChick · 27/05/2012 21:33

Lunchtime visits home to shave your legs? Shock

I do the same as FioFio above.

timetosmile · 27/05/2012 21:47

Is it just me who shaves my armpits because they get extraordinarily sweaty if I leave the hair to grow?

So for me its more a hygiene than appearance concern.

or am I the only extraordinarily sweaty one on the thread? Confused

Akermanis · 27/05/2012 21:51

I'm a bloke and I shave my pits!! shock horror, I exercise a lot and find it helps with sweaty stink pit syndrome.

Bumperlicious · 27/05/2012 21:53

Now you see I don't get the "for me" argument. I get nothing out of shaving my pits, except a dizzy spell when I try and look at the to shave in the shower. Legs is different. I like the feeling of shaved legs, but I realised pits I do just for society.

OP posts:
timetosmile · 27/05/2012 21:55

wave to Akermanis

I didn't know I had a syndrome Smile

beansmum · 27/05/2012 22:57

I think we've lost the battle on this one. My theory is that equality in hair removal is going to come from all men being required to remove their hair as well. They already have to sort out their eyebrows, ears, noses and back/chest hair. Lots of men I know shave their legs and all sorts of other bits. It's a bit stupid, but at least it's fair!

BertieBotts · 27/05/2012 23:34

Men have to sort out eyebrows?
