Woman's voice (fairly girly): "...but what do I know, I'm just an astrophysicist"
"Ford Focus, a triumph of contradiction"
(I think)
Lovely

cool. Compare with this one from a few years ago (I use this when teaching how language is gendered/sexist in ALevel English lessons).

gadgets for the girls

Perhaps some advertisers are finally moving on.

StealthPolarBear · 19/05/2012 08:59

not convinced its a good thing tbh
Plays to the stereotype that women don't do "hard" subjects

True - but at least it acknowledges that women are not just about shopping and gossip. Unlike just about every other ad campaign out there.

AliceHurled · 19/05/2012 09:03

What? They're acknowledging it in order to highlight it as a contradiction aren't they? That is hardly a good thing.

sassytheFIRST · 19/05/2012 09:10

Right. I read that (and I havent seen the ad in question, just Stealth's rendering of it here) to say even the very brightest people don't know everything. The contradiction for me is that you can be intelligent in your (wowser) field, but not know other stuff which others think is fairly basic. Could be a M or F voiceover - would work either way.

Perhaps the ad itself makes the sexism you guys see much more clear.

StealthPolarBear · 19/05/2012 09:19

Yes in fairness I didn't hear rthe rest of Tje ad, she could have been saying she.coildnt add up and didn't belive in gravity. It was only those last 2 sentences which caught my attention. But girly, babyish voice makes me suspicious. I will listen out for it again and let you know.

Christ, that ad for Nissan Micra wasn't laden with stereotypes was it? Who on earth comes up with this stuff?

We're introduced to women's obsessive need to shop in the second paragraph: which is also useful after a shopping spree. Say you get back to your car loaded down with bags:

The next paragraph is all about rear parking sensors, because we all know women have trouble parking. Especially when we're off to meet our mates for a girlie night out and can't walk a couple of hundred yards in our stilettos.

Then there's yet another reference to our compulsive need to shop until we drop: For those of us who tend to overdo it with the shopping

Some stuff about headlamps staying on for two minutes to help us reach our front door in safety, bless.

And the drive computer will helpfully remind us of anniversaries and birthdays.

Remind me never to buy a Nissan Micro.

StealthPolarBear · 25/05/2012 08:41

I haven't heard that one but it sounds awful. Consider yourself reminded. Maybe you could ask your DH to put a reminder into your car computer so that your little girly brain doesn't have to cope with too much information
