A neglected form of sexism. Apparently

Hmmmm

I can't argue with some of their observations. But I tend to agree with Julie Bindel:

"The reality is that the public domain belongs entirely to men and the disadvantages they face are just the price they pay. It's tough cheese. Masculinity is just learned behaviour in the same way that femininity is. Ultimately, if we dismantle the patriarchy, that would end up being better for men, too."

Jesus, this ('life chances') is a class issue.

A very serious class issue.

I have never met a feminist yet who doesn't 'get' this.

Victims of murder and violence are disproportionately male?

And perpetrators are, what, exactly?

messyisthenewtidy · 13/05/2012 21:03

I think this comment sums up how I feel:

"men are victims of patriarchal society just as women are ... though this operates via a different locus - it remains part the system that we are all subject to. I welcome this research and this book. It does not however negate or erase the fact that women continue to experience many subtle (and less subtle) forms of societal oppression. The conclusion (alluded to by this article) that suggests men's oppression is a result of "matriarchal society" is ridiculous. for example, if a man chooses to stay home and raise his children he will experience societal condemnation (likened to a kind of social castration). this is not a result of matriarchy. this is a result of patriarchy."

Glad to see it was voted the most popular.

Fucking hell now these MRA whiners are writing books.

I bet he's got a face like the back end of a bus and just can't get a shag.

That's a feminist joke for all the whiners out there. It's what men usually say about women who complain about inequality.

If you don't like the status quo, change it! Don't blame the other group who also suffer.

I have 2 boys and I worry for them. But it's not the fault of feminism that things are the way they are.

He can't be serious! He can't really believe that women are not the butt of dreadful sexist jokes or sexist stereotypes in "comedies"! It's hard to find comedies that don't churn out these anti-woman stereotypes. And as for the advertising point - that just beggars belief! So there is a little bit of anti-male sexism. Stacked up against LOADS of anti-female sexism...

messyisthenewtidy · 14/05/2012 10:45

The anti-male sexism in advertising is a good point, but that's not a result of feminism, far from it. The vast majority of feminists are against gender stereotyping. That's just capitalism trying to make a shedload.

PHMT. What these "victimized" men need to do is to have a conversation with patriarchy, in the same way women/feminists have been doing since the 70's. They need to deconstruct what manhood means and the way in which patriarchy has defined it. They need to rebel against the straitjacket patriarchy has put on them.

Problem is that too many of them actually benefit from the patriarchal setup to want to dismantle it.
