What comedies are not sexist?

Following on from the Friends thread, what non-sexist comedies would people recommend? Recently I've started noticing the sexism in tv a lot more, it would be nice to watch something free from that.

Preferably stuff that avoids all the other -isms too, but I think I might be demanding the impossible now.

Parks and Recreation. One of the most feminist things on TV at the moment.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 13/06/2013 21:15

Agree with:
30 Rock
Roseanne
Dinner ladies - I think it's genius and watch it in one sitting every now and then
Parks and Rec
Ab Fab

Adding:
Golden Girls
Nighty Night
Girls on Top

Warming to my theme, Dinnerladies smashes through the Bechdel Test

  • 6 or 7 lead female characters, most of whom are well past the menopause, supported by 2 main male characters

singing I disagree, I saw that scene, and the joke (imo) is that he is really vile and pleased with himself that he managed to get in there while his wife was asleep. Liz looks horrified. He is always portrayed as a loser and a lech. I think it's a pretty accurate portrayal of what many people think is Ok in a relationship but is actually rape. Maybe a bit much for a comedy scene, but that's how I took it and I think Tine Fey is a big old feminist so wouldn't write a scene where rape was the joke. He is the joke iyswim..

I love Golden Girls.

Think the HBO series "girls" is meant to be feminist but haven't seen it as haven't got HBO.

Parks and rec definitely is..

Xena is kind of a comedy and I think feminist.

Gavin & Stacey

LineRunner · 13/06/2013 22:33

My DD likes Up The Women.

SingingSilver · 13/06/2013 23:34

HullMum I do swym. I'll be honest - I wasn't bothered by the scene when I saw it, it did take reading some blogs to make me see it was problematic. Because when you get right down to the bare bones of it, we are looking at a rape from the rapists viewpoint in that scene. If, and I know it wouldn't have been the case, but IF his wife was slim and beautiful that scene wouldn't have been written. It's 'funny' because she's overweight and unattractive. It's pretty unpleasant. I know Tina Fey is a feminist, but that joke - if they had to air it - would have worked without the visual.

I love Golden Girls too. Someone uploaded all seven series here http://www.youtube.com/user/goldengirlpalace/videos

Girls, written and produced and staring Lena Dunham, is well worth a try.

Agree about How I met your Mother. Terrible sexism mysogyny and slut shaming and fat shaming.
A scene this week showed Barney calling a woman too old to date if she was aged 30 but when he found out she was 29 he changed his mind. DH likes this and The Big Bang Theory. I do recall a big scene in a restaurant where Sheldon slut shames Penny about the no of partners she may have had. These attitudes seem to be everywhere Sad

Darkesteyes · 14/06/2013 00:10

Ive heard good things about Girls but i dont have Sky.

BOF · 14/06/2013 00:12

You can buy series one on DVD. Well worth it.

Spiritedwolf · 14/06/2013 01:15

Not totally a comedy, but I love Gilmore Girls which full of wit.

ShinyPenny · 14/06/2013 01:38

YY to Parks & Recreation!

HullMum · 14/06/2013 02:44

I actually find How I met Your Mother funny, which makes me feel shit as it is so misogynist.

I remember a bit where Barney is talkin about what an asshole he is and how he actually once sold a woman! Shock

Scarletohello · 15/06/2013 12:36

I love parks and rec and just realised through reading this, one of the reasons is, it isn't sexist at all! Ironically the one sexist character (Tom?) is portrayed as a sleazy douchebag!

I get really saddened by the casual sexism in shows that are otherwise hilarious ( e.g Big Bang Theory), it spoils my enjoyment of them. But what do you do..?

FridaKarlov · 16/06/2013 18:37

Community is a great series for non sexism, racial diversity and the subverting of stereotypes. It takws a little while to warm up though.

Parks & Rec has a brilliant female lead and supporting characters.

Arrested Development is another good one.
