Has anyone else gnashed their teeth at this yet?

P+G

Proud sponsors of mums.

Ha fucking HA. Angry

Even DH (who is a bit skeptical of my occasional feminist rants, and will often say 'you've been on mumsnet again, haven't you?') has been asking 'what about the dads? and the daughters?'

Mums do the washing, grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, whilst their sons pursue their dreams and become athletes.

I am heavily pg, so have wept a bit at the TV advert with mums from different countries supporting their little athletes as they grow. But I am still wondering where the fathers are. My husband is just as capable of washing up dishes as I am. However, from now on, neither he nor I will be using Fairy liquid to do any washing up.

Grr.

Absolutely. Why would it have been so difficult to say, "P&G - proud sponsors of families" or "...proud sponsors of the future", or some such??

Kveta · 07/05/2012 13:56

exactly!

Proud sponsors of families would be so much more inclusive, and they could broaden their adverts too (they have some manly brands, like Old Spice, don't they?) - but no, it has to be mums because

well, why, actually?

I don't understand it at all.

"However, from now on, neither he nor I will be using Fairy liquid to do any washing up."

Ha Ha - I love this. I have lost track of which companies and shops that I refused to do business with because they have somehow offended my principles.

Don't know if it actually works because if I'm ever asked why I don't shop there or buy a certain product for example, I always get a quizzical 'you're off your head' look from them.

I still do it though.

Yes P&G are now on my list

KRITIQ · 07/05/2012 15:30

I finally saw it when someone linked elsewhere and I can honestly say I haven't seen such a mawkish, cringeworthy commercial in yonks. It's also one of those that pees everyone off with it's message - it's all about mums, so that annoys the what-about-the-menzers and the MRAs, it depicts mothers as self-sacrificing and finding esteem only through the achievements of their kids, which pees off feminists. Oh, and "sponsorship," implies giving something for free - money, products, in kind donations, something like that. As far as I'm aware, they make mums and all their other customers BUY their products.

So, crap from start to finish!

A list of P&G brands

I'v already been refusing to buy Old Spice for years.

TheSmallClanger · 07/05/2012 17:28

It's interesting you bring up Old Spice - the relaunched ad campaign for it is a rare example of a male product being marketed via women in a genuinely funny, good-natured way. I think it was originally a US campaign, which is even more surprising.

NicholasTeakozy · 07/05/2012 17:44

Is that the 'I'm on a horse' ad? That is genuinely funny.

StealthPolarBear · 07/05/2012 17:48

Not seen the ad, too busy doing the washing up

Kveta · 07/05/2012 17:52

The old spice ad is brilliant.
Shame about the rest of the products they sell.

my boycott is going to have to wait. DH just pointed out we have half a bottle of fairy left in the kitchen, as he is doing the washing up :o

however, DC2 is going to be in Huggies rather than Pampers to start with, and we will be using Persil for washing clothes, and supermarket/Boots own brand version of Vicks from now on.

Something like "because all Mum's are Heroes" on the side of an Iceland food lorry. WTF is heroic about putting cheap frozen food on the table and DH is just as good at cooking frozen chips.

But no buying and cooking food is always the woman's jobAngry

StealthPolarBear · 07/05/2012 20:55

Ugh to huggies
Asda and Tesco own are good. Sainsburys not so good I found

Kveta · 08/05/2012 09:49

huggies work for us! and were on special offer this week :o

agress sains own brand are pretty shitty.

weirdly, the Ariel advert is very positive - just lots of athletes of various ethnicities and sexes, and a voiceover about making sure your colours don't run. Which is all they need really. No bollocks about mum washing the kit properly.

Oh I love Sainsbury's own brand - the eco ones!

Anyway I agree OP with P&G being awful with these adverts.

HipHopOpotomus · 08/05/2012 11:33

Oh this had me gnashing teeth since I first saw it months ago.

Currently not knowingly buying P&G (not difficult as I don't buy any of their stuff except rarely on special perhaps) the whole thing annoys me so very much. I've never been to Iceland so no worries there.

The 'Old Spice' man is top of my tasty fellas list, and he can stay right there. But I've never brought Old Spice.

HipHopOpotomus · 08/05/2012 11:35

re nappies I've found Sainsburys's own brand to be exactly the same as Tescos. I prefer the LIDL ones - brilliant!

Eglu · 08/05/2012 11:39

Those P&G adverts have been bugging me for ages. I'm not even part of the feminist gang on here.

It is so ridiculous. Only Mums use cleaning products etc.

Kveta · 08/05/2012 11:42

Eglu I'm not part of the gang either. But those adverts are seriously damaging my tooth enamel.

re: nappies, we only have Tesco, Sainsburys, or Waitrose locally, so will be sticking with huggies. I found all own brand nappies rubbish for DS, but who knows what will work for DC2?

DH does use Old Spice, when we can find it in this country. He would happily boycott it, but I like the smell too much Blush :o I am now looking for alternative razors to Gillette for myself though.
