More choice for girls for their Summer Uniform.

Speaking to friends and observing my DDs playing in the park after school has made me think that girls should have the choice of wearing shorts if they so wish as part of their summer uniform. After all such choice is available to them in the winter months. For those tomboy girls who would not wear a pinafore dress there is no other choice that wear boys trousers which really is not right (correct me if I am wrong) and also wearing a skirt, especially when older, may stop a girl from some activities which will result in displaying your pants to the entire school: climbing, playing on the bars, etc.

I'd be greatful for your opinion on the matter and what choice is available to girls in re to uniforms in your DCs's schools.

TIA

I don't want to tell schools which type of shorts (gray, blue, gingham etc) they should chose for girrls, I just think there should be one type available in their official school uniform list, for those reasons exexpat explained much better than I did.

In my DD's school there are a lot of girls wearing trousers in winter (part of the school uniform) but a handful wearing shorts in summer. One reasons could well be that wearing shorts in summer equates wearing a 'boy's uniform' which will sadly put off a lot of girls.
Ideally there shouldn't even me a Boy's and Girl's uniform imo but let's discuss one thing at the time.

I personally like both the culottes and the shorts you linked. Great for winter and great option for the summer too as long as not made of the same winter teflon material or it will defeat the purpose of freshenss and lightness. (A point valid also for the boys's short).

high school same all year round, primary wear shorts [but not short shorts have to knee length so perhaps culottes]. My dd[10] wears dresses/skirts and wears cycling shorts under so she can hand stand at will and keep her modesty

lancelottie · 04/05/2012 11:49

Girls' navy skorts here, OP, if these are any good?

geraldinetheluckygoat · 04/05/2012 11:56

lots of the girls at our school wear dresses with cycling shorts or cropped leggings underneath.....

Takver · 04/05/2012 11:59

Primary school here - boys + girls can wear polo shirts + shorts, girls also have the option of gingham dress (to be exace, no sex specification in uniform guide, simply offers polo shirt + shorts or gingham dress). Little girls generally wear the dress (tbh I think dresses are more comfy for the tinies as they don't have the waist to hold up trousers/shorts), KS2 mostly either stick with trousers + polo shirt or wear shorts.

Secondary school - no summer uniform AFAIK, certainly have never seen anyone in one - trousers + polo shirt for all throughout the year.

Takver · 04/05/2012 12:01

I've used cut off cotton trousers hemmed up for shorts - works well as they always seem to either trash the knees or grow too tall long before they're worn out or too small round the middle.

Takver · 04/05/2012 12:02

Littleducks, why don't you think those next shorts suitable for primary school? Look fine to me - grey & reasonably smart.

PippiBurnsTheBra · 04/05/2012 12:03

takver that seems the way to go, yes.

lancelottie the skirt you linked to will certainly be the favourite with some girls but will not go down well with our head Wink

lancelottie that is not uniform but is a lovely skirt. The next shorts would be deemed too short for school as well

startail · 04/05/2012 12:16

Sensible girls aren't brought up to give a monkeys about showing their knickers and just get on with it.

That said checked school dresses do tend to be longer and more restrictive than little pleated winter skirts.

DD1 managed to rip one from hem to waist jumping out of a tree.

FarloRigel · 04/05/2012 12:17

My 5yo DD loves her summer dress but also playing rough and tumble with the boys so she wears the pelerine style tights under her dress. All the little holes kerp her cool but her knees don't get so scuffed and she gets to keep her pants covered and so avoid comments from idiots.

FarloRigel · 04/05/2012 12:18

Sodding phone. keep her cool.

PippiBurnsTheBra · 04/05/2012 12:21

startail indeed.

4yo dd wears shorts (tailored for girls) and culottes. In fact today she is wearing culottes with tights under them. She also has trousers, pinafores, summer dresses and over the knee summer skirts. Loads of choice. Her shorts and culottes are from M&S.

imnotmymum · 04/05/2012 12:47

Startail my DD was told to either wear trousers or wear shorts under or not be allowed to do handstand/cartwheel etc by TA new policy dreamed up ! In my day that's why we did it ...

CMOTDibbler · 04/05/2012 12:51

Sainsburys certainly had gingham culottes and shirts last year

androbbob · 04/05/2012 13:06

My DD has gone to school today in gingham top and skirt combo - from Tesco. Looks better on her than a dress, which frankly after about Year 3 when they are still diddy, looks wrong. Some of the Yr6 girls are getting well developed and / or are on the chunky side and the dresses look silly!

I will be asking the school to reconsider the girls summer uniform for Upper School as I can imagine that a grey skirt / skort or tailored shorts with a blue polo shirt, rather than their winter uniform of blue shirt and tie and skirt / trousers would look equally as smart.

Our school has said that they can still wear the winter uniform if they want to though.

MadameChinLegs · 04/05/2012 13:11

black cullottes in Asda. Low stock atm but I imagine back in for Summer

PippiBurnsTheBra · 04/05/2012 13:33

Apropos. Joke from friend has just arrived and made me laugh. I will share it with you - this could be my head in the cloud DD!

Little girl comes home from school and says to her mum that the boys keep asking her to do cartwheels. Mum says, that's because they want to see you knickers! Little girl says, that's why I put them in my pocket!.

SardineQueen · 04/05/2012 13:47

Will have to keep eyes peeled for more gingham options!

chocolatecrispies · 12/05/2012 19:32

One of the schools around here does have a salwar kameez uniform option. Most of the girls wear it.

ByTheSea · 12/05/2012 19:37

We hate the rule at our school that girls can only wear skirts or dresses in summer. I have looked for culottes/skorts for my tomboy to wear, but can't find any. She is not allowed to, but would do it anyway.

Flobbadobs · 22/06/2012 14:42

My DD can wear the same as the boys in whatever weather if she wants. White polo shirt, grey skirt/shorts/pants/pinafore and school jumper or a cardigan. She does wear the gingham dress quite a lot in warmer weather but as long as they are in school uniform in the right colour it's a fairly open choice.
It's a LEA primary school btw.

fertilefrog · 20/05/2017 06:45

I've checked on www.whittakersschoolwear.co.uk/ and they supply shorts for girls Smile
