Discriminatory laws around the world

I've recently been researching in depth the laws of countries around the world where sexual violence has been a significant feature of conflict - and it is incredibly shocking and harrowing, not only to discover the sheer scale of the problem (1.8million women raped in Democratic Republic of Congo alone) but also how little the law protects women in these countries from abuse. I was really struck by the fact that in this country we think of justice and the law fairly interchangeably - if you asked many people 'what is justice', they'd answer 'seeing the law obeyed', yet in so many countries there is no justice for women in the law. If anyone's interested, my piece is here: www.womenundersiegeproject.org/blog/entry/defining-justice-when-the-law-is-unjust-how-gender-imbalance-affects-women

That's a great article Laura. SGM linked it last night on the Feminist Book Club thread which was Helena Kennedy's Eve was framed.
