Who on Earth thought it would be a good idea to mix prostitution with children's chocolates!

I can imagine DCs off on their holidays at home now asking their parents 'what does 'pimp' mean?'

Does anyone have a link to the ofcom complaints number?

Seriously?

That just defies description.

Hoebag · 02/04/2012 15:54

I think without incurring rage,

Its referring to the show 'pimp my ride' as in making something more extravagant etc.

KRITIQ · 02/04/2012 15:57

It is that Hoebag, but even that use is dodgy and the double entendre of "pimp my ride" is a pretty deliberate reference to prostitution, linked to jazzing up a car.

msrisotto · 02/04/2012 15:58

Yes because being a pimp is an aspirational thing, specially for kids.

Hoebag · 02/04/2012 16:00

I see how its innapropriate but its not something I would be actively :O about,

but each to their own.

skrumle · 02/04/2012 18:05

nearly as offensive as the daily mail page last week talking about beyonce pimping up her baby sling - i really did find that grim.

SleepyFergus · 02/04/2012 18:25
Biscuit

Guess none of you will like this then either
www.pimpthatsnack.com/

msrisotto · 02/04/2012 18:41

Hey, I love that website but hate the name. I have a problem with promoting pimps, which is what using the term as an expression of improvement does. Do you think prostituting women is ok?

victorialucas · 02/04/2012 19:13

So 'to pimp' is now a verb meaning to improve?!?

Please let this not get into the OED or common usage.

OP posts:
msrisotto · 02/04/2012 19:18

Well when used in the context of pimping a car - I saw the show named "Pimp my ride" and they took an old decrepit car, resprayed it, tuned the engine, put fancy electronics etc in.

msrisotto · 02/04/2012 19:20

There are several definitions according to urbandictionary but this is one I knew of:
However, as a verb
1.) to pimp something out is to make it look very ghettofab and all that nifty stuff in the above paragraph.
2.) to pimp is to advertise (generally, in an enthusiastic sense) or to call attention in order to bring acclaim to something; to promote.

msrisotto · 02/04/2012 19:20

As an adjective: If somethin' is pimpin', it's pretty darn cool. It's probably something "normal" that's tricked out ghettolicious and gawdy.

Greythorne · 02/04/2012 19:32

I loathe the use of "pimp" to mean improve / jazz up.

I loathe Jamie Oliver using "pimp up" to mean spice up a dish.

This is foul.

Hoebag · 02/04/2012 21:17

Do you think prostituting women is ok?

Was that question aimed at me?

All I'm saying is that its other meaning has become so ingrained I can't see how it would be changed now.

catgirl1976 · 02/04/2012 21:33

Please let this not get into the OED or common usage.

Already is in the OED

"[with object] informal make (something) more showy or impressive: he pimped up the car with spoilers and twin-spoke 18-inch alloys"

TheWomanFormerlyKnownAsSGM · 02/04/2012 22:10

D'oh made the OED. I'm not sure I trust their judgement anymore.

The use of pimp is misogynist.

victorialucas · 03/04/2012 00:31

It's as bad as using the n word in my book.

OP posts:
WidowWadman · 03/04/2012 06:45

If it was used in reference to prostitution I'd see the point, but the word pimp is clearly undergoing semantic change, and thereby losing the prostitution connotation.

The OED is not prescriptive, but descriptive, so there's no loss of trust in judgement to be had - it just merely notes down how a word is used in common usage. Not including a word because of political reasons because some people don't agree with its history would be very very wrong.

msrisotto · 03/04/2012 07:03

No I wasn't addressing you in particular hoebag. If you use 'pimp' in this new, bling sense then you are not just condoning prostitution but glamorising it.

Lovecat · 04/04/2012 16:14

I've boycotted Giraffe ever since they ran a Pimp up your Pizza promotion - I really don't want to have to explain to DD what that word means as yet, and I don't want her using it in that context.

When I complained their (female) marketing manager implied I was humourless, said she wasn't offended by it so why should I be? Needless to say, I've not been back...
