I had never heard of this amazing woman. Just thought I would share.

Ooh, that is very cool. I will tell my SIL, she's another German mathematician - wonder if she's heard of her?

It sounds as if lots of modern academics could learn from the attitude of some of her colleagues, too.

Thank you ever so much for posting that beachcomber, it is really well written and made me feel a bit emotional for some reason.

msrisotto · 29/03/2012 18:37

Thank you, lovely to hear about.

TheFallenMadonna · 29/03/2012 18:44

Not only have I heard of her, I have her picture up on my classroom wall Smile

Beachcomber · 29/03/2012 21:31

You're welcome - I found the article moving too.

TheFallenMadonna - that is great to hear.

I just asked dh and he knows a mathematician who has named his daughter Emmy after her.

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 29/03/2012 21:46

I'd never heard of her, but I'm glad I have now. I will definitely be showing that article to DD1 who is a budding mathematician herself.

Thanks so much for posting that beachcomber. I have heard of her but only recently when I read "Why E = mc2 and why it matters" by Brian Cox. He goes into detail about her work and how it relates to Einstein's theory of relativity. It's nice to see that she had a lot of male supporters at the time, who were decent enough to stick up for her and to see that gender had nothing to do with mathematical awesomeness.

Alittlefeminist · 30/03/2012 17:08

Thanks for posting this, I have never heard about her before! I also just learned about Mileva Maric, a brilliant mathematician and physicist, and Einstein's first wife, of whom he said: "[she] solves all my mathematical problems" (www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/027753959090094E)

Let's spread the word about women in science!

Thanks for that Beach. V interesting.

I am going to pass the link on MMeL for her non-pink magazine for girls. Maybe one of the talented people working on that would like to do an age appropriate article for Jump.
