I don't do twitter, so might have missed something here.

But surely it's a bit of a high risk stunt for them: are they really that confident of their demographic that they assess their boycott will make a measurable impact on the company? Or are they planning some picketing/occupation (as was done recently to the Tesco near Parliament) in the hope of some publicity?

AyeRobot · 16/03/2012 18:37

They want the publicity.

Well, it will certainly publicise something...

STIDW · 16/03/2012 18:46

I don't do Twitter either, I was just following something else up and because I think there may be guilty of contempt of court for something else. IF you click on the photo link in the Tweets relating to M&S it shows the letters to M&S threatening a boycott because M&S is sponsoring gender hate on MN!

Must proof read before posting - they may be guilty Blush

It seems a bit odd that an organization that is supposedly about men being better able to exercise parental responsibility for their children would organize a boycot against a store who advertises on a website where they don't like the comments some posters make on the forum. It makes them look entirely driven by a dislike of mothers, instead of by a belief in the value of fatherhood. A total own goal surely? I know their policy goals have always been vaccuous but they had some attention grabbing stunts and a few snazzy sound bites from time to time, which gave them power in the media This really seems to expose the lack of positive direction. I can't understand why any activist organization would do it.

I suspect it would take less than 1%!

Trills · 16/03/2012 20:12

They have fewer Twitter followers than I do. 416 in fact. That is nothing.

I doubt them boycotting anything will make the slightest bit of difference. They are small and insignificant, they are just trying to stir up a fuss that is massively out of proportion to their actual influence.

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 16/03/2012 20:14

It's ok, I've got it covered. I'm popping in to M&S tomorrow to buy one of their gorgeous chocolate cakes. That should more then make up for the amount of money lost by the F4J boycott.

SweetTheSting · 16/03/2012 20:16

Ah, TeenStrop, can you get me one too? If you buy something for activist reasons, it's calorie free, right?

usualsuspect · 16/03/2012 20:17

No one takes them seriously though do they?

They are a laughing stock

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 16/03/2012 20:22

they take themselves seriously, does that count?

Sweet: Grin

ButterPecanMuffin · 16/03/2012 20:54

Oh diddums, I'm sure M&S are really worried about the huge drop in profits they will suffer.

I wonder what they'll do when they realize M&S don't give a stuff?

A different subject matter, but it reminds me a little bit of the parenting group in the States, that wanted people to boycott JC Penney (US department store) because the store is using Ellen DeGeneres to front a campaign. By doing so, JC Penney is "condoning homosexuality." Anyway, when checking up on news back home, I noticed that the group have ended their campaign, and they claim it's because "they've made their point." What they meant to say was, 'the campaign was completely ineffective, no-one listened, in fact visitor numbers to JC Penney went up slightly.' Oh how I laughed.

I predict a similar outcome here!

EdlessAllenPoe · 16/03/2012 20:58

they do know that sunday is mothers day, so lots of people will be going for choccies, flowers, pink fizz, and a ready meal?

EdlessAllenPoe · 16/03/2012 20:58

and knickers/bra sets?

JaneMare · 16/03/2012 21:01

aw, bless them

M&S must be laughing their heads off quaking in their boots Grin

ButterPecanMuffin · 16/03/2012 21:12

Crap - that Nadine O'Connor woman has it in for MN.

I "love" the final line in Matt O'Connor's letter to M&S...

Ours is not a campaign that will occupy. Ours is a campaign that will electrify.

Who on earth came up with that bullshit?!

DoUntoOtters · 16/03/2012 21:16

DD wanted to buy the M&S Mothers' Day meal. I may let her now.

badmammy · 16/03/2012 21:29

"they do know that sunday is mothers day"

Bet that is why they chose this weekend.

I think they think they have more support than they really do...

ButterPecanMuffin · 16/03/2012 21:34

It was good to see a father challenging that O'Connor woman (who I now realize is Matt O'Connor's second wife, gosh I'm learning) on Twitter thought.

ButterPecanMuffin · 16/03/2012 21:34

I am truly baffled by this.

MN is the infrastructure which enables people to voice their opinions:

'All men are bastards, based on my experience' says one.
'No they're not, based on my experience,' says another.

They are protesting against a polemic?
Actually, they aren't really protesting.
They are promoting their organisation by piggybacking onto well known brands.

(TBH, I've never noticed M+S on here. But now I really fancy a nice ready meal and some comfy pants. Shall be out to purchase same forthwith. Thanks F4J - Job done!)
