You may or may not be familiar with some of the misogynist legislation that is being tabled by right-wing politicians in the USA at the moment, as part of a campaign to roll back women's reproductive rights. If you haven't been following this issue or it hasn't hit the headlines much in the UK, here are some links to what's been going on:
Arizona moves to force female employees to prove a valid non-contraceptive reason for use of birth control
Rush Limbaugh calls a graduate student a 'slut' and a 'prostitute' for wanting to ensure fair access to birth control
Virginia attempts to pass law forcing any woman seeking an abortion, including rape victims, to submit to a transvaginal ultrasound if necessary
House Committee hearing on contraceptive coverage calls an all-male panel with no women representatives

It blows my mind that male politicians have the temerity to try and interfere with women's reproductive rights in this day and age, when those rights were hard won by previous generations of feminists. It's an assault on fundamental rights that only affect women's bodies. I can't see how it's driven by anything other than bigotry and misogyny, where a woman's body is no longer her own but the property of public discourse.

Anyway, my nomination for Feminist of the Month (I've just invented this award Grin) is Nina Turner, an Ohio State Senator, who has tabled a bill to regulate the provision of Viagra to men, requiring all men to submit to counseling with a sex therapist and exploration of natural methods or celibacy to treat erectile dysfunction rather than assuming that Viagra is necessary. They will also have to prove through testimony of their partner that their relationship suffers because of ED.

Description of her initiative and other similar ones

I love that women are fighting back against the misogynists and rediscovering their inner feminists! Just thought I would share the story (thanks if you've read this far) to show how women can fight sexist fire with fire in the political sphere.

Thank you for this. It is SO important to not forget even the little victories, and those who are sticking their neck out to make a difference. Their stories can be amazingly inspiring, and inspiration is sorely needed when injustice seems to be on the rise all around us.

My jaw hits the floor every time I read some fresh hell coming out of US state legislatures or the mouths of right wing politicians. (so glad I left 25 years ago - sad to say that, but I am.)

Just watched the interview. Made me laugh out loud. That woman is awesome!

Can I nominate Donnesbury for the excellent 'abortion' cartoons

It just boggles my mind that these male legislators think they have the right to tell women what to do with their bodies and lives.

The kind of right wing morons who would force women to stay pregnant are also the kind to offer single/working mothers the least support. Ironic that....

THANKS for posting this - she is FAB.

"It's all about the love."

messyisthenewtidy · 16/03/2012 11:11

Yeah, "We love you. And therefore we're gonna tell you what's good for you!" Ah the joys of benevolent sexism...

Yes, I thought she was so awesome when I saw her interview. It cheered me up so much!

I only moved here to the US recently and while I was familiar with the Jesus-freak factor, i hadn't realized just how far they were willing to take things and the misogyny that influences them. Rick Santorum, one of the top two Republican candidates for President this year, was quoted a couple of months ago saying that rape victims seeking an abortion should instead try to make the best out of a bad situation and keep the baby.... Hmm.

Since I've been here I've been getting so effing fed up of hearing men pontificate in the media on women and what they should do with their bodies - here's a clue, guys: push an 8lb baby out of your body after 48 hours of pain and THEN we can talk. Otherwise: STFU.

Re Rick Santorum:

I think Nina Turner is fantastic and this is exactly the approach that should be adopted against the likes of Nadine Dorries over here. I had to laugh at the apples/bananas comparison which she so easily swept aside with the simple fact that they are both fruit! LOL! The frightening aspect is that the people like Santorum are the legislators.
