It was really affecting and sad. Makes me so angry that our lot & US used the plight of women there as a reason to go to war and now they've got what they wanted they are turning their backs. They never meant it in the first place.

When they went to the market and she was wearing her burqua and walking 2 steps behind as a proper wife should and then at home being sold by him and there was no way out it was just so so awful.

I saw one last night where a family was selling their little boys for £800 o they had enough money to feed the other children through the harsh winter.

They had footage of him saying goodbye to his mummy before being taken away. Luckily for him he was 'bought' by a family 'who wanted a son' and was therefore clothed and fed and educated.

Other little children are sold for work or sex.

I saw it. She's trapped, really, isn't she? It said somewhere in the report that, should she leave, the husband gets custody of the children... Did I understand that right? Was only half focused on the programme at the time.

takingback yes over there women and children belong to the men a la the olden days here.

norman that sounds really distressing too.

I know that this section sometimes gets complaints that we focus on the UK rather than much worse things around the world but really what can you say? What can you do?

I tell you what stuff like this might well be better with women in half the positions of power. I know some women are right bastards and some men are luvverly but still I think that it would make a real difference.

There's no money in Afghanistan apparently but there's still enough money for men to buy women.

That's how the men there like it.

I didnt see it. I am sure I read that Afganistan is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a woman. It is gobsmacking and heart breaking.

Just read the text. FFS. What a total irony it makes of the male claim that women are covered and kept indoors to "protect" them from other men. The home is the most dangerous place for women (where have I heard that before?).

Sardine: your point about half of women in power etc. reminds of a feature I read a couple of weeks ago - it was either in the Saturday Times magazine or the Sunday Telegraph magazine - can't remember which. It was an interview with a female member of the Afghan Parliament whose every journey to work is with outriders after the various attempts on her life and that of her children - because she has committed the crime of being born female and wanting a say in how her country is run. I'll see if I can find it on line but not all the mag. features are on line....
