Did any of you see this article on feminism and porn in stylist magazine? What did you think?

It's a bit witless. Same old stupid porn defenses aka porn is OK as long as it's "nice" porn.

Also what's she talking about how porn only got nasty in the 1980s? Linda Lovelace was raped to make Deep Throat, the biggest porn film of the 1970s.

I skim read but did she manage to write that whole article without mentioning rape and misogyny?

Nyac · 27/02/2012 18:33

It's also a complete insult and distortion of feminism, to pretend that it can be used as a stamp of approval on material that exploits and degrades women.

People who don't understand what feminism means, need to fuck off using the label to support their own bad treatment of women.

Yes, rape and misogyny were missed out. I - thought the article was very odd which was a shame as I've thought Tanya Gold was okay-ish previously.

She's a bit hit and miss, in my experience.

the article
off to bed will read and comment tomorrow

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 28/02/2012 08:00

She mentioned rape in the second paragraph. Apparently it's what happens when men don't get their sex -

... sexual deprivation leaks out in nasty ways ? from pinched bums and unlived lives, all the way to sexual assault and rape

I didn't read any further than this bit Angry

KRITIQ · 28/02/2012 08:08

Glad I didn't bother to click the link then. So, people genuinely still believe the tripe/trope of men who just can't control their sexual urges so need an outlet to keep them from raping? If you're looking for man-hating views, look no further.

I sometimes wonder what Tanya Gold and Julie Bindel talk about at the Guardian Xmas party.

Nyac · 28/02/2012 08:20

The thing that gets me about this stuff, and with every other anti-feminist anti-woman trope, is that the person making the argument probably thinks they are being truly original, when in fact we've heard the argument a zillion times before.

I was thinking that on the Mary Beard thread. She's thinking her "they chose it", "there's worse stuff" about Miss World is probably some kind of searing insight when actually it's just knee-jerk thoughtlessness, repeating what a whole lot of people have said justifying sexism year upon year upon year. I bet Tanya Gold thinks that she's made her case and she's happy with it, but what she's written here just so weak.

TheLightPassenger · 28/02/2012 10:26

aaaaaaaaaaaaargh. such a wilful lack of acknowledgment of the middle ground between prudery and porn, that a "normal" sex life comes in a commercial package. An assumption that prudery or lack of interest in sex is automatically dreadful and shameful.

solidgoldbrass · 28/02/2012 20:42

I didn't think much of the article either, but from the opposite viewpoint. I think more feminists should make more porn. There is not, actually, anything wrong with being filmed having sex, with showing off sexually, with wanting to watch others having sex. Making porn that is free of exploitation is a good thing. Entertainment is a good thing (oh, and the argument that people who are happy to appear in porn are only morally OK if they are not paid is a bullshit one: musicians, writers, painters and dancers get paid for doing work that they enjoy, why shouldn't porn performers?).
