It really pisses me off.

Same with the sci-fi magazines. It's extremely annoying.

IwoulddoPachacuti · 24/02/2012 11:31

It's annoying. Apparently women are only interested in celebs and make-up etcHmm

hazeyjane · 24/02/2012 11:34

this winds me up too, all the baking,cross-stitch, babies and gossip in the womens interest, sport, music, films, comicbook and sci-fi in the men's interest.

I have stopped reading magazines altogether. I find they make me too angry. And the division between what constitutes male/female interest enrages me too.

I don't want to support this industry. I especially hate those magazines that bully celebrities, and the glossies that pretend to have women's interests at heart, but really don't.

Trills · 24/02/2012 13:17

Yes, very annoying.

Men like films and music, women like looking at celebrities and calling them fat. Apparently.

Wonder if there's any connection with the observations in another recent thread here, about girls hanging around watching boys doing stuff?

Napdamnyou · 24/02/2012 14:48

When I worked on Q it was 60/40 male/female readership split, so odd that it got put with men's section, mbut the ad team sold it as part of the 'men's lifestyle' offering. Few, if any female ad campaigns were ever run in it but a lot of male only ads ie shaving cream etc ran. Annoying, I agree. Loving music is about as non gendered as you can get.

TunipTheVegemal · 24/02/2012 14:54

Private Eye is often next to Nuts and Zoo on the top shelf. It really annoys me.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 24/02/2012 14:56

New Scientist also often found in that area.

Sanjeev · 24/02/2012 15:04

Maybe they should split the magazines into two sections - chav reading (Grazia, Nuts, OK, FHM) on the lower shelves (so the readership down't have to lift their knuckles too far from the floor), and the intelligent/niche journalism higher up.

JerichoStarQuilt · 24/02/2012 15:52

Ignoring sanjeev and 'chav reading' Hmm ...

I think the whole thing is ridiculous. DH cooks, he's good. He also manages to support both a penis and an interest in what our flat looks like. He doesn't particularly mind the fact that cooking magazines and interior decoration are apparently 'women's magazines', but it is fairly stupid.

astreetcarnamedknackered · 24/02/2012 16:46

Glad I'm not alone!

A few years ago I accosted the manager in sainsburys and challenged him as to why empirewdl magazine is in men's interest. He couldn't say. His attitude was very 'computer says no'.

So resorted to random act of feminism and put the lot next to a magazine on cross stitch and then put all the twinkle girls magazine in amidst GQ.

astreetcarnamedknackered · 24/02/2012 16:47

Empire.what on earth is empirewdl?

yellowraincoat · 24/02/2012 16:52

"chav reading" - WTAF?

This annoys me too. Just looking on the WHSmith website, and apparently women are interested in how they look, celebrities and cooking, while men are interested in sports, films, music, politics, cars...

flippinada · 24/02/2012 16:54

I do enjoy reading music and film magazines on occasion by IME they are very geared towards men.

I remember noticing a copy of 'Q' in my local library and the cover photo was a picture of two rock starts (can't remember who) with semi clad women in a submissive pose draped all over them. So I guess they aren't too bothered about pissing off female music fans.

I stopped reading most mainstream magazines/media some time ago and certainly don't miss the experience.

flippinada · 24/02/2012 16:59

Just notice rock starts. Of course I meant rock stars .

Sanjeev · 24/02/2012 18:36

How would you classify stuff like OK, Nuts, Grazia etc. then? Jordan's latest tit job, Kate's bumlift, Wayne's pubic wig......surely this stuff lowers IQ's, denigrates women etc etc. Who do you think buys these things - Kate Adie, Germaine Greer?? I bet Karen Matthews had a cupboard full of the shite.

yellowraincoat · 24/02/2012 18:44

You're right, it's probably the working classes, those uneducated bastards.

astreetcarnamedknackered · 24/02/2012 18:48

Oh dear.

This post has taken a turn I did not expect.

OP posts:
messyisthenewtidy · 24/02/2012 19:15

I think the thread took a turn for the worse when Sanjeev equated low IQ with what he disparaging calls "chav" culture, which can only mean one thing: Sanjeev should be on the bottom shelf.

JerichoStarQuilt · 24/02/2012 19:19

I doubt magazines can 'lower IQ' Grin!

I think Grazia has many faults, but it can often be quite feminist and aware. I find the equation of Grazia with 'chav' culture odd - for all its faults, it is better than, say, Vogue or Harpers', and surely they have pretensions to being 'upper class?

Not really sure what 'chav' means in this context, other than the fact it's clearly intended as a put down.

Napdamnyou · 24/02/2012 19:27

Q magazine, used as an example earlier is now 75/25 male/female according to its readership profile.

www.bauermedia.co.uk/Brands/Q/

You can also find the percentage of ABC1 readership by googling a magazine's 'readership profile' or 'media pack'

This should enable you to discover whether it has been placed in the right section. Age of readers and what demographic they fit into is taken from a large rolling survey which is weighted to correspond to UK population and conducted by a third party - not the mag publishers, who pay to subscribe to the service and share the data.

Napdamnyou · 24/02/2012 19:29

www.bauermedia.co.uk/Brands/Empire/

Empire, also mentioned upthread is 76 percent male readership.

Its blurb makes it clear that is aimed at affluent male movie fans.
