Feminist Film Club?

I was just wondering if anyone would be up for this? Would be based on the same format as the Feminist Book Club, with one film a month, but possibly a bit easier for some of us to keep up with. If anyone is up for this, please let me know. :)

"couldn't we watch films made by women instead?"

i think that might be a good starting point actually - directors generally have much more control than actors...

Definitely agree with films made by women. :) At least one of my favourites falls into that category.

Thanks for the link, Skrumle.

Winter's Bone sounds like a good first candidate from several perspectives.

MildlyNarkyPuffin · 19/01/2012 22:49

Whip It is on my list. It's hard to find competitive sports type films that pass the test.

I'd actually be really interested in a feminist review of Drop Dead Gorgeous. Not your typical pageant film.

FrothyDragon · 19/01/2012 23:08

I think I started watching Drop Dead Gorgeous a while back. Don't remember finishing it, though.

Winter's Bone sounds like a good one. :) I'll start a database of recommended films tomorrow. Any more suggestions would be appreciated. :)

raise the red lantern is good to talk about

MrsFionaCharming · 20/01/2012 00:39

Not as high-brow sounding as the other suggestions, but can I add in 'Bend it like Beckham'. It was written and directed by a woman, and I think the topic is pretty feminist. Plus its a good one to watch with kids.

is anyone interested in Moolaadé? feels churlish to have any gripes about it given the content of most other films but would like to know what others think

southeastastra · 20/01/2012 09:58

company of wolves is on horror channel tonight that would be good too

NellaLarsen · 28/01/2012 01:00

I'd love to join in Smile

Lovely and Amazing and Me Without You are films I would've considered feminist before I discovered this forum. Now I know more, I'm keen to watch again and perhaps pick up nuance I didn't before.

Frothy If you want a silent film recommendation, I really enjoyed 'Flesh and the Devil' with Greta Garbo.

It's completely over the top and fun to watch.

'If the devil can't seduce a man directly, he will come to him in the form of a woman.'

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flesh_and_the_Devil

Also on the classics front: All About Eve.

Wonderfully funny, great acting, and it would be interesting to explore the archetype it portrayed: women befriending and betraying other women.

And last, this may sound weird, but I think it might be interesting to watch a war film.

War films are generally made by men for a male audience. I think it would be interesting to get a feminist take on one, because there is a whole gender aspect to both actual war and film war that is not explored enough. But I know that might not actually be much fun so totally understand if no one is up for that Smile.

The Piano - directed by Jane Campion. I think of The Piano as a feminist film.
