Wick police handcuffed rape victim and ordered her to strip in an open cell

Outrageous story. More proof if any was needed that the police aren't interested in investigating and prosecuting rape, but rather persecuting victims. a 6% conviction rate isn't low enough. They won't be satisfied until it is victims being charged:

www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/2011/12/11/police-condemned-after-ordering-raoe-victim-to-strip-in-open-cell-86908-23627438/

"The woman says the Dutchman made a pass that was rebuffed but he later pushed her into one of the bedrooms.
She said: ?He was a very big, strong guy and there was no way I could fight him off. I said over and over again, ?No, I don?t want this? and begged him to stop.?
Two officers sent to the scene took more than three hours to arrive.
Guidelines issued by ACPOS, the body made up of Scotland?s chief police officers, say any report of rape must be dealt with immediately.
Officers also refused to allow the woman?s mother to comfort her while she made her statement and wouldn?t let her go home to sleep after enduring a medical exam for forensic evidence.
The man she accused was questioned and released by police within hours of the incident being reported.
He flew home the next day but his alleged victim ? who was bravely willing to be named but who we have chosen not to identify ? only found that out when her mum was told at the post office.
When the woman was brought back to the station at Wick to make a further statement, she was accused of making up the story.
Two weeks later police put her in handcuffs on her own doorstep and warned she could be charged with wasting police time.
And at the police station in Wick, she suffered the humiliation of having to remove every item of clothing as people walked past the open door.
The woman left Scotland after her ordeal and returned to Canada where her family used to live.
She said: ?Being raped was the worst thing that has happened to me but it got even worse because of the way the police dealt with it.
?I didn?t think this sort of thing could happen any longer in Scotland. I still can?t believe it.
?Women will not report rape if they can be treated like this. Politicians must force change.?"

That's the most horrifying thing I have ever heard, for the police to not believe victims is one thing, but to treat her in that way is just so wrong I can't even articulate it. This sounds like something you would expect from the most remote parts of Pakistan. I hope she can find a way to recover in Canada away from this.

throwingcaution · 20/12/2011 10:41

That is horrendous I hope they are all sacked.

that's horrific.
You wouldn't think it could still happen

FreudianSlipper · 20/12/2011 11:59

just terrible

how much longer are women expected to put up and shut up and if they complain subjected to more abuse. i thought we had passed that to some degree here sadly not

ThatVikRinA22 · 20/12/2011 11:59

i darent open it....

as a police officer i would be raging if i did i suspect. I have been first on scene at a rape and i can only say i do my absolute utmost to help and support, and we have a dedicated team who deal with this type of crime in my force, as i suspect most do.

i hate stories like this, it heaps doubt on all bobbies, i can only speak for my colleagues but when we have attended rapes or sexual assaults my colleagues have been fantastic with the victim, and i would hope i am the same. I have taken dedicated training on rape, in my own time.

we arent all bad. honest.

PamBeesly · 20/12/2011 13:42

I felt sick reading that. I was not surprised by it however and its stories like this that dissuade people who have been raped from going to the police. Did the Dutchman ever get charged? I wonder is he just walking around the Netherlands now thinking 'oh that was easy'
My heart goes out to that woman and all others like her.

sfxmum · 20/12/2011 13:45

that is fucking horrible Sad why handcuff her?

santastooearlymustdache · 20/12/2011 13:49

absolutely sickening, that poor woman Sad

the last sentence brings my bile forth though 'Politicians must force change'

erm, no those Police Officers must be brought to task and the Force needs to treat victims as such, not as suspects.

KRITIQ · 20/12/2011 14:37

Parallels with this case: Layla Ibrahim (with an added layer of racism.)

As Vicar says, not all women bringing rape allegations are treated in this way. The danger, however, is that the "message" from such incidents will make folks even more reluctant to come forward - not that most people who've been raped report what happened to any authorities.

The politician quoted called for an investigation and unless that happens. I'm sceptical about whether authorities genuinely "learn" from such investigations, but there's zilch hope of any change and every chance it will happen again if there ain't.

Sarahplane · 20/12/2011 16:43

That is fucking horrifying. Poor women.

edam · 20/12/2011 16:47

Abosolutely outrageous - the poor woman, on top of the original trauma, and from people who she should be able to rely on. Every officer involved in this despicable behaviour should be sacked. As should the top brass who have allowed it to happen. The officers clearly thought they'd get away with it, so misogyny is very likely to be enemic in this force, or this part of the force, all the way up to the very top.

LePruneDeMaTante · 20/12/2011 16:55

Misogyny is endemic in the Highlands - I mean, it is elsewhere as well, but you're isolated up there. (I had family up there.)

SardineQueen · 20/12/2011 16:58

What? What on earth did they do that for?

I suppose they decided she was making it up and decided to punish her themselves. I can't think of another explanation.

santastooearlymustdache · 20/12/2011 17:03

because they are bastards and thought she would keep quiet, Sardine

coppertop · 20/12/2011 17:03

What on earth were they thinking???!

I hope the woman concerned is receiving more support in Canada than she did in Scotland.

HollyGhost · 20/12/2011 18:35

utterly disgusting behaviour from the police

I hope they are held to account, at the highest level

nailak · 20/12/2011 18:51

Why did they make her strip with open door? What would happen if she refused?
I don't get it,

thunderboltsandlightning · 20/12/2011 19:52

It's the handcuffs too, marking her out as a criminal.

Bet the guy who raped her didn't have handcuffs put on him.

How horrific Sad I know lots of women who've been raped, non who've reported it though Sad

TheCrackFox · 20/12/2011 20:04

All the police officers involved should be sacked. Truly disgusting behaviour on their part.

PattySimcox · 20/12/2011 20:07

Truly disturbing. I sincerely hope those officers are sacked.

Fucking hell Sad

I was attacked when I lived in Aberdeen. The officer who I saw at the time was excellent BUT when CPS took over the case, it was awful. I was accused of having had 'regretful sex' and they suggested I had made the accusation to avoid my boyfriend falling out with me! It took me longer to get over how they treated me than it did to get over the rape. GOd knows how that poor woman will suffer.
