Has anyone read Men, Women, and Chain Saws: Gender in Modern Horror Film?

I'm ill and have been trawling the internet, and came across the theory of the Final Girl in horror films.

I found the relevant book on Amazon, but it's out of print, so it's only second hand ones available and they are pricey.

I wouldn't mind paying for it though if I knew it was really good.

Thanks

Not read it, I'm afraid, but you've just given me an idea for my dissertation, so thank you! Grin

I know, it does sound fascinating, doesn't it.

I've added it to my wishlist too and requested it on kindle. You can read the beginning of it on Amazon as well.

Here is the wiki article about the Final Girl, which is how I found out about the book in the first place.

You're welcome DCMFD :)

Nope, but I'm gonna make sure I do soon, it's going on my wishlist too!
Do you think they'll hurry to print a new edition or just hoik the prices even higher on Amazon? Smile If enough of us add it to our wishlists it's got to be the former? Wink

That does sound interesting.

I bet it applies to programs like criminal minds as well.

It is indeed. Not sure I agree with Final Destination having a "Final Girl". Although Clear Waters is a dominant character, I'd say Alex Carter is the protagonist, although they took an unusual stance in FD2... Everything from there on consisted of a Final Girl, if I remember correctly. I'm sure FD2, 3 and The Final Destination featured Final Girls, but watching FD5 tonight.

Will give FD1 a watch afterwards, but to me, the audience was always drawn to identify with Alex in that film.

Very interesting theory indeed.

Yes, I read it as part of my film studies degree (way back in 96-99! eep!). It's brilliant & well worth a read.
