Facebook rape (hate speech) page is back! Please report.

The page is called "You know she's playing hard to get when you're chasing her down an alley" - and at the top of the page is a post "Spread the word people! Let's get the page back up, if only to annoy the hysterical RINJers." -
I have no idea who RINJers are, but if they're us, it would be a shame NOT to go over to the page and click "REPORT" for hate speech, wouldn't it? Let's shut it back down, and hope that FB don't take so long this time to remember their ethics policy applies to everyone.
Xmas Grin

RINJAS... Reporting Ninjas? Reporting but not showing yourselves? Looks like a merger of words to me but I could be completely off.

There are literally hundreds of pages like that all over facebook, twitter and what not. Comedians on facebook post far worse jokes. TV shows post far worse from quotes from their show. It's not a personal attack or even something from a toilet wall. Just seems an off the cuff joke. There's no discrimination or prejudice...

I wouldn't bother with it personally. If anything, it's just feeding the troll.

ElfenorRathbone · 11/12/2011 20:51

Just because other people do and say shit things, doesn't mean we shouldn't deal with this one shit thing.

If you took that approach to everything, no-one would ever tackle anything.

Drowz0r · 11/12/2011 23:20

Actually, you'd accomplish a lot more if you took that view and you'd focus on the big fish instead of some tiny facebook group. People will always make little quips and jokes about everything - some people make a pretty good living out of it and most people do it as a joke rather than to actually deeply hurt someone. It could be some 13 year old kid trolololing with his friends. Is that really the enemy here?

Better off focusing your energy on something bigger.

Feminists are focusing on a big fish, namely Facebook. Feminists are tackling Facebook's reluctance to remove such rape jokes and rape myths.

The fact that the multi-billion dollar patriarchal corporate entity of Facebook, allows such content on its website and has a potential readership of several hundred million people is a big issue.

I'm a little confused as to why you think more regulation to jokes on facebook is a good idea? Like pages only really show up to people who look for them. It's not as if I put "Free T-shirts" and "I raped my friend for a joke" pages come up instead. Our own televisions have a HUGE amount of worse stuff coming through them than a little old facebook page.

So no, a facebook like page is not a big fish, rallying against feminism or encouraging rape. It's just some person making a little joke - and the only people sharing the joke are those who look for it.

Have you seen the adult channel on your skybox lately? I'm sure there are some rape fantasies on there, which you can watch from your own home, or your children accidental turn over to. At least with facebook you are pretty much aimed into what you typed in.

A facebook like page is not a big issue.

Well TheBrandyButterflyEffect people don't often state "you should focus your energy on other things... like me! I do _" because it sounds arrogant. Have you ever asked someone where you should focus your energy instead? Personally, seeing as you were wondering, when I want to "change the world" so to speak, I do it at election time, join a union or political party, make something viral, build a website, get a fan base... meet with like minded people. I make it for a national or global concern. Here is a comparison.

I would vote for someone who said rape was bad.
I would join a union who discourages rape talks in a professional work environment
I would brain storm ideas to educate others as to why some people would get offended by rape jokes and places you shouldn't say them.

I wouldn't spend my time repeatability reporting a facebook page, which only seems to be encouraging the page creators.

HandDivedScallopsrgreat · 12/12/2011 06:21

It's not a joke, that's the point. If you consider it funny then...
You can do all the things you mention and report the FBI page. Although I do wonder how you distinguish between someone who thinks rape is good and rape is bad. They aren't likely to admit the former are they, if they are in a position to be elected. And I think "rape joke" is an oxymoron so would "educate" that if you are making jokes about rape then you are a misogynist.
Hence why I will report the FB page. it doesn't take a lot of my time (certainly a lot less time than to create the page) and I can do other things at the same time eg bf so I am in fact wasting no free time! Win win situation.

ExquisiteChristmasCake · 12/12/2011 06:46

By the by there is a group on FB dedicated to reporting unsavoury "groups" (mainly the crime groups). I looked at it a few months ago and this particular group was there-so I imagine it has been reported by a fair few hundred thousand users. It says a lot about FB with their reluctance to remove such pages. Angry

AlwaysWild · 12/12/2011 07:07

Drowzor why don't you go and do something useful rather than focusing on the little fish of telling women what to do on mumsnet.

ExquisiteChristmasCake · 12/12/2011 07:11

By crime groups I meant hate crime groups

The best way to get rid of these pages is not to complain to Facebook - they won't do anything.

You need to write to the advertisers who appear at the side of the page - take a screenshot and send them an email.

Facebook will only listen if it looks like a page is losing them valuable advertising revenue.

nursenic · 12/12/2011 12:34

Steamedtreaclesponge

Yes! yes! Yes! That is how to do it. Vote with your wallets and then let them know.

Let's all steamroller the advertisers. DDE and her friends are on it as I type.

JuliaScurr · 12/12/2011 12:40

Liking that idea Steamed & nursenic

blackcurrants · 12/12/2011 12:42

Drowz0r rape culture* is a very big fish, this is a manifestation of rape culture, therefore it is worth my time to fight it. And look, I can do it while on the train to teach a class on feminism and theology. Woooo!

*definitions of rape culture here, here, here and here, if you fancy a look.

Lol Brandy, there are a lot of jokes out there about cars. People die due to cars a lot more than people get raped in the UK. Does that mean we ban everything to do with cars? That kind of generalisation will get us no where. The point is, you are not recieving the joke in the way it is intended (rightfully or wrongfully) and secondly you saught out the page. Do you think you would have honestly found it if you weren't looking for it?

Hitting facebook in the pocket might work, though it can go either way. Facebook may make more of an effort to remove the page, the other view they may take is they'll see you as just as much an extremist as this rape joke page, and ban you both. Though I suppose if you do it in numbers they're unlikely to ban you all - I would expect a good thousand or so users. I do think it's worth remembering we are effectively all guests on facebook and do not have the right to control it - only express our offense to certain user created content. It would be worth any communication sent be done in a professional and friendly way rather than trying to bully them into submission. Remember the aim is to convince and convert people rather than crush them into the ground.

Blackcurrants, it doesn't have anything to do with "rape culture" (yes I checked your links). Rape culture is about the practice and acceptance of rape and that rape is not a bad thing. A rape joke is making a joke about something that is accepted to be wrong and bad. You can argue the sensitivity of it if you like, but you can't say rape joke = actual rape acceptance and a part of rape culture. P.S. Are you a teacher? Just some help; don't cite wikipedia as source on your classes. I know Unis and such certainly don't accept them. Perhaps a reputable source like the BBC or something would be more suited - although personally I do like wiki...

blackcurrants · 12/12/2011 13:06

Drow, Wiki is an acceptable introductory source on an internet forum. I don't need to cite scholarly sources to defend the idea of rape culture in a feminist space, we agree that it exists and it is bad and must end. Or, rather, the feminists here do . I'm not sure you do.

If you can't comprehend how making jokes about rape contributes to the practice and acceptance of rape, your reading and reasoning ability leaves you unable to engage with me on further topics. Don't address me again, I will not respond.

How can somebody even laugh about rape? How is it funny.

Beyond me....

theothersparticus · 12/12/2011 13:13

"People die due to cars a lot more than people get raped in the UK. Does that mean we ban everything to do with cars? That kind of generalisation will get us no where." Shock Seriously? You are going comparing a useful tool of the modern age to a horrific sexual assault?

"The point is, you are not recieving the joke in the way it is intended (rightfully or wrongfully) and secondly you saught out the page. Do you think you would have honestly found it if you weren't looking for it?" Why should we have to take this joke as a joke? Rape is not funny, ever. Why could anyone ever think that joking about something this traumatic is okay? Articles and websites that relate to racism, paedophilia and animal cruelty are searched for and removed from the internet to protect people everyday, why are we not entitled to this protection because we happen to have vaginas?

Drowz0r · 12/12/2011 13:14

I didn't say anything about not using wiki in a forum, I said for your classes. Re-read my post. I actually quite like wiki. Less knee jerk reaction to mis-reading the forum in your next post please.

Also, claiming I have no reasoning ability and then saying "I don't want to talk to you!" kinda speaks for itself...

Well, the masses of the UK actually find rape jokes funny. It's dark humour... and been along for longer than all of us. You can agree or disagree with allowing it but ultimately those who want to stop rape jokes are a minority.

With this in mind, if you really want to stop rape jokes, converting, educating and convincing people is your best bet - not shouting people of different opinion down. Albeit difficult for those who find it a sensitive subject.

Drowz0r · 12/12/2011 13:22

Sparticus (sorry, I missed your post, must have been typing at the same time) you have sort of missed the point there. The obsecurity of the comparison was a reflection of the previously made comparison. Though if you want an actual one, people make car-crash jokes. That works too.

There are a huge amount of stand up comics that make a lot of money from rape jokes. People laugh at these rape jokes, ergo rape jokes are funny. I don't think anyone here is saying Rape itself is funny.

Rape jokes != Rape.
