I saw this yesterday as well

Truly horrifying. One of the most distressing things I've read for sometime

God knows what's NOT being reported Sad

EdithWeston · 02/12/2011 13:06

I started a thread about women in Afganistan a little while ago. The report I linked covers a lot of pertinent issues (not in the headlines does not mean totally unreported).

Discussion didn't really go anywhere then - presumably because of the sheer impossibility of stimulating any useful action?

FreudianSlipper · 02/12/2011 13:22

a rape vitim marrying the rapist was suggest long ago in the bible he violated her his punishment was to be forced to marry her without being able to divorce Hmm

its been law in many countries, this is why law and religion should be totally seperate

Beachcomber · 02/12/2011 15:01

I see that her brothers' 'honour' is being cited as an issue. Angry

MayaAngelCool · 05/12/2011 22:34

EdithWeston - snap to starting doomed threads about women in dire circumstances. Sad

Yes, her brother's honour should clearly be of paramount importance. The kind of brother who doesn't appear to give a shit when this sort of thing happens to his sister should definitely be given first consideration. Hmm

I think often people don't post a lot on these types of threads because we are in agreement that this is clearly terrible misogyny. Lots of people will be reading though, so posting articles like this is always appreciated.

BertieBotts · 06/12/2011 08:11

There was mention of a safe house in that article - perhaps some kind of fundraising for this? Is it being set up by a charity? Is this something amnesty international would get involved with, or do they deal with false imprisonment rather than unjust laws?

KRITIQ · 06/12/2011 10:58

This isn't exactly the same but is along the same lines. This California woman will be forced to pay her ex husband's legal costs and £1000 a month maintenance when he's released from prison in 2014 following his conviction for raping her. Shock

DA Pushes For New Law To Protect Spousal Assault Victims.

KRITIQ · 06/12/2011 10:59

Make that $1000 a month - still a substantial sum.

MayaAngelCool · 07/12/2011 20:59

Shock at the California story. That is horrific! Despicable! And, like our beloved phone hacking scandal, it also shows rather unpleasantly that so-called 'civilised' countries (i.e. those which like to consider themselves more civilised than developing countries) are no better than any other countries when it comes to abuse and corruption.

Beachcomber - Smile. I hope that is true. Though it doesn't take much to write a quick post in agreement.
