I've contacted Agent Provocateur...look forward to seeing what their response is...

TheSmallClanger · 04/11/2011 14:37

I think the poses, expressions and costuming (snurk) are heavily inspired by the artist Allen Jones, who does/did vile creepy sculptures of shop window mannequins in fetish underwear, bound and contorted into suitcases and chair-shapes.

It's nasty and it's not even original nasty.

aStarInStrangeways · 04/11/2011 14:39

i also think it is very sneery, for want of a better word, that there are no men involved in this scenario. just women wanting to turn other women into blank-faced sex slaves.

nailak · 04/11/2011 16:21

it is porn

where is the advert going to be shown? I hope not tv or cinema.

The fuckers will get away with it because the ASA will be all literal minded and say that it is women attacking the woman so it is all fine.

I guess this advert is aimed at men who I imagine do the lingerie shopping in the run-up to Christmas.

EleanorRathbone · 04/11/2011 17:50

It just shows how neanderthal and sexist the advertising industry still is.

As Victor says, hundreds of people were involved in this and if any of them were brave enough to express any disquiet, I expect they were told that they were being puritannical, ugly or boring, because women being portrayed as sex toys is OK now feminism's over and we're all equal now. Oh and make the tea love and don't ask how much the men in the office who do the same job as you, are earning.

Wankers. I hope all the men involved in this catch a variety of venereal diseases which involve having their dicks drop off.

LaPruneDeMaTante · 04/11/2011 18:00

Just think about it - someone had to write that, storyboard it, submit it to a whole board of people who greenlit it, they had to run it by the people who financed it, they would have had loads of 'creative' meetings about it where they got creative with marker pen. Then they had to film it, produce it, market it, probably market research it, etc etc.

Honestly, the type of people who make commercials (I know some) - it's all about being really nice not really bright. Sad I can imagine how this got through.

TheRealTillyMinto · 04/11/2011 18:29

AP sells a uniquely odd product. to be 'put on' by women, but clearly bought by men....

if DP every bought me anything like that, i would make him wear it if he liked it so much.

(actually DP is a size 14 - he does pantomine and owns a ball dress - he makes a f*ing hideous Ugly Sister)

EleanorRathbone · 04/11/2011 19:39

You know what, I'd be really pissed off if a man bought me this shit instead of a proper present.

It's like buying someone a vacuum cleaner for her birthday.

OK if it was a one off impulse buy just as a present - but if it were a proper present occasion, like christmas or a birthday, I would be peeved.

And would buy him the complete works of Andrea Dworkin for his birthday as payback.

That is atrocious. Can't believe someone thought that was actually a good idea.

catwithflowers · 04/11/2011 19:45

Horrible and offensive. Have no idea who they are aiming at but their market researchers should be sacked.

EleanorRathbone · 04/11/2011 19:57

Thing is, they're not aiming at intelligent women are they.

They're aiming at hopelessly vacuous men.

peggyblackett · 04/11/2011 20:09

Awful, awful ad.

ElderberrySyrup · 04/11/2011 20:13

they're aiming at porn-using men. Turn your normal girlfriend into a sex toy via vampiric girl on girl assault some expensive underwear.

JuliaScurr · 04/11/2011 20:28

yy Elderberry, dp thought it was based on 'lesbian' porn for hetero men. Turn your gf into a robot. If aimed at women, the idea is to commodify yourself. Not much new there, but the unseen predator threat is a bit novel and quite unpleasant. Buy our drawers and get attacked by lesbian robot vampires in your own home!

Prolesworth · 04/11/2011 20:31

I thought there were shades of the stepford wives in it as well. Sinister.

Selky · 04/11/2011 20:31

Good grief that is horrible!

The bit where all the women gather round her on their knees reminds me of scene in Dracula when the three sisters kill the baby.

It also reminds me of The Stepford Wives.

It in no way makes me want to buy knickers.

Selky · 04/11/2011 20:31

Ah Prolesworth beat me to it!

ElderberrySyrup · 04/11/2011 20:35

yes, it is full of cinematic references. This means it is witty, sophisticated Art, didn't you know? (I'm sure the ASA will buy that line, anyway.)
