New! Magazine - body issues

I don't know if this is the right place for this thread but I've got a bee in my bonnet.

On the latest New! magaine, they have three of the TOWIE stars in the cover and their so-called body issues.

One story highlights Lauren Goodger having cellulite - well the picture shows nothing more than most women have and she's a nice shape so why highlight this?

Then they have a picture of Lauren Pope claiming she's worried about aging and saying she's looking 'tired' - she looks fine!!

But most annoyingly they have a picture of Gemma who they say has 'ballooned' form a size 14 to a size 16. That's right 'ballooned'. How can you go up one dress size and people say you have 'ballooned'. In that case I 'balloon' several times a month up and down! How is that meant to make women feel?

No wonder people have body issues when stories like this are in the mags. [hangry]

I guess i'm just naive :(

This is the perfect place for bees in bonnets [hgrin] I'm thinking of making my own honey. And it does you good to let it out somewhere.

Yes body image is definately a feminist issue, along with the pornification (sp?) of womens bodies. I feel annoyed that at a perfectly respectable size 12 i'm encouraged to 'slim for that perfect xmas party dress' Hmm I also get called tired, I just point out that I just haven't been tango'd unlike my co-workers

Phew! Although all that royal jelly might do my skin good!!!

It seems nearly ALL mainstream mags aimed at women are like this. I despair when browsing through the newsagents, looking for reading material before boarding a train or plane because I just can't bring myself to pay money for any of that tosh. I usually end up with Private Eye (still awful in its own way) or BBC History or something. I'm sure they weren't all so bad even 5 years ago, but maybe my tolerance levels have just dropped in that time! :)

SinicalSal · 26/10/2011 15:04

god I hate women's mags.

If they're not crazily 'aspirational' - 'Your budget capsule wardrobe just £2000 for a coat and a lipstick', they're crazily sick-cartoonish 'raped by my grandads hamster' ffs

Not to mention the vast swathes dedicated to finding fault with every aspect of our bodies. No wonder we have such dysfunctiuonal notions of normality.

It's that the "unhealthy habits that are bad for your appearance" articles always seem to target women.

Get yourself a nice light kindle, messy- the new one is cheaper now, you can get subscriptions to all sorts of decent magazines on it, and obviously gazillions of books; they're great for reading on the train because nobody has to see what trash you like. Nothing would induce me to ever buy a woman's magazine again.

And on a related topic, it's the 40th anniversary of The Joy of Sex and you can read about the bodies shown in that book in the 1970s versus what's expected today:

I get the monthly mags, Red Psychologies and sometimes Easy Living. I much prefer those to the celebrity trashy weekly ones.
i used to worry about my niece being affected by all the negative body images around but she has absolutely no interest in that kind of thing whatsoever. (shes sixteen) and is a bit of a rock chick and reads Kerrang. Shes quite a strong minded young woman thankfully. Im bloody glad im not a teenager today. I thought it was bad enough in the late 80s-early 90s when i was one but it seems so much worse now.
The only time i flick through the trashy mags is when im in the hairdressers.
Disgusted with what New has done.

MrsClown · 27/10/2011 10:53

I only read those stupid mags at the hairdressers too, even then it annoys me.

I find Women and Home a good magazine. I thought it would be all knitting patterns and recipes but it isnt. They had a recent article about powerful women in different genres. They covered Annie Lennox and many others. It was really good.
