Another sexist advert - what have you spotted recently and what messages do they send?

Just been reading the Virgin thread. As I was reading, an ad for the new Nescafe instant coffee came on.

Basically - bloke sitting at table takes sip of coffee, which inspires him to stand up, walk over to his wife who is doing something at a kitchen worktop and pull her over for a romantic dance.

So, guy relaxing while the wife makes his coffee/gets the tea. Wife's reward for the work is romance?

Forgive me, I'm not a very eloquent feminist!

I know its old now, and someone probably mentioned it before, byt that awful Yorkie - Its not for girls. WTF? How did they get away with that?

BecauseImWorthIt · 02/10/2011 23:19

Mercedes press advertising. Shows beautiful new car, with gratuitous, bikini-clad model posing on top.

I despair sometimes.

And this from someone who used to work in advertising.

I have always defended advertising as something that should reflect the social situation - after all, advertising does have to sell stuff. But there is no way that I can justify perpetuating such outrageous stereotypes.

PamBeesly Re: Yorkie advert.

I was in a shop with DD when she was younger (about 5yrs old) and we were each choosing a bar of chocolate. She saw the Yorkies, then said sadly "but they're not for girls, so I can't have one". No amount of my cajoling her could make her change her mind. I was bloody fuming Angry

thats the same as Macoys 'man crisps'

i hate the train one where there is a middle aged fat bloke with his belly all over the place but the 2 women are toned up without an oz of fat between them

MissPB · 04/10/2011 10:47

thank you Aviatrix I am glad I'm not the only one! Feeling cross enough to write to BA about it to be honest.

omydarlin · 05/10/2011 23:46

i am pretty sure i heard a m o d or army advert on sunday night talking of 'man management'

BertieBotts · 05/10/2011 23:51

I hate the sweetcorn one. I tutted to DP about it. I haven't seen many of the others as we don't watch much TV (Don't get a chance - DS is hooked on CBeeBies!)

The headache one sounded vile. Reminded me of that Mel Gibson film where he basically suggests an ad almost identical to that and all the women in the room immediately think "What a cunt." (Paraphrased Grin)

My favourite of all time

"Now I'm free to live my own life, my way!"

And Shock at the Irish adverts Pam! When was Irish culture replaced by Nuts magazine?
